Summer Sanders Stays Ahead in Cycling World

October 10, 2012 @ No Comments

The folks at Schwinn Bikes and the ThinkFirst National Injury Prevention Foundation put their heads together and came up with Helments on Heads. Thhat’s an education campaign designed to have bicyclists wear helmets. As part of an event Tuesday (Oct. 9) at Reinberg School in Chicago, Olympic gold medalist and mother of two youngsters Summer Sanders participated in an assembly that included fitting the school’s seventh-grade students with free helmets.

Pacific Cycle president Alice Tillett.

Reliable sources (co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris) report Summer will be a guest on the Thursday (Oct. 11) edition of “Sports & Torts” at noon Chicago time on talkzone.com. Also scheduled to be on the highly acclaimed program (well, it is in the Spada and Harris households) is former Dallas Cowboys star Bob Lilly.

The show also will be available on podcast at talkzone.com later in the day Thursday, if things go according to play (which they actually sometimes do).

Meanwhile back at the school event, also on hand was Alice Tillett, president of Pacific Cycle in Madison, Wis. (how Pacific is the name of a business in the Midwest is anybody’s guess). Information about Helmets on Heads is available at helmetsonheads.org. Or you could listen to this interview with Tillett:

Midweek musings:

* After losing 2-0 Tuesday night in Oakland, the Detroit Tigers lead the Athletics 2-1 in their best-of-five American League Division series. A reminder (as if White Sox fans need one), the Sox went 3-3 vs. Oakland, 2-5 vs. Baltimore and 5-2 vs. the New York Yankees. Against the other postseason team, the Tigers, the Sox went 6-12 — which is basically why the South Siders’ season ended on the last day of the 2012 campaign.

* The most important game of a best-of-five series is Game 3 because one team either will be elminated or have a 2-1 lead. OK, so it’s most important till Game 4 — provided that there’s a Game 4.

* Something says former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, who was sentenced from 30-60 years in prison for sex crimes against young boys, will not exit prison as a free man any time soon. Or a live person.

The entertainment elements (meaning the Luvabulls, etc.) were in midseason form for the Chicago Bulls’ exhibition opener Tuesday at the United Center. Of course, the Luvabulls had an all-veteran team of familiar faces on the court compared to the basketball team that has brought in several new players and is missing its best player, Derrick Rose as he recovers from anterior-cruciate ligament surgery.

Luvabulls veteran Ashley was on the floor for the Bulls' exhibition opener Tuesday vs, Memphis.

Luol Deng had 18 points to lead the Bulls with Richard Hamilton, Nazr Mohammed and Nate Robinson each adding 13 in defeating the Memphis Grizzliers 92-88. Mohammed also had a game-high 12 rebounds. Jerome Jordan had 13 to lead Memphis with Flip Murray adding 11.

The Bulls used a 32-13 third quarter to overcome a 52-49 halftime deficit.

The Bulls went 1-for-21 from the field in the fourth quarter, as Memphis almost rallied for the victory.

“We could not get anything to fall,” Bulls forward Taj Gibson said of the fourth quarter. “We make those shots in practice.

“It is just different in a game. … Like I said, it’s the first game. We’ll make mistakes; we just have to learn from it.”

“I think we started slowly but picked it up and splayed well in the second and third quarters,” Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. “In the fourth quarter, we struggled. … We know what we have to work on.”

Some video from the Bulls’ preseason opener:

With a little luck, there will be more videos of the Luvabulls in the coming days. At least that’s the plan. And every now and then, such plans do work out the way the visual-aid department at elliotthrris.com envisions.
