Wrestling With Reality: Bears, Shimmer, Velvet Sky

Monday meanderings: If today is the game between the Detroit Lions (2-3) and the Chicago Bears (4-1) at Soldier Field on “Monday Night Football,” then something says today must be Monday. That revelation is even more of a certainty than the team winning the turnover battle will win the game.

* And, yes, Bears quarterback Jay Cutler might want to make sure he doesn’t throw any completions to the guys in Lions jerseys, if the Bears want to retain sole possession of first place in the NFC North.

* The Green Bay Packers (4-3) and Minnesota Vikings (5-2) won their games Sunday. Let the record show the NFC North is the only division with two teams at least two games above .500.

* Speaking of being above .500, the Houston Texans — whom the Bears face on Sunday night, Nov. 11 — are 6-1 for the first time in franchise history.

* Speaking of the Packers, quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw for 342 yards with three touchdowns in their 30-20 victory at St. Louis. He reached 150 touchdown passes (151 actually) in the second-fewest games (76 games) in NFL history. Only Pro Football Hall of Famer Dan Marino did it quicker: 62 games.

* Speaking of the Vikings, running back Adrian Peterson rushed for 153 yards and a touchdown in his 80th career game as Minnesota defeated Arizona, 21-14. Peterson has 67 career rushing TDs. Through 80 games, only Emmitt Smith (78), Jim Brown (76) and LaDainian Tomlinson (73) recorded more.

* From the elliottharris.com department of proper English use (not usage): A reminder — mostly to broadcasters — the wording should be “career high,” not “new career high.” Similarly, there are no “old” records. There are “previous” records. Or at least that’s the way some of us were taught many years ago, and reliable sources say that’s still the correct way to phrase things.

There’s nothing better than a Game 7 in a best-of-seven series, although fans of the St. Louis Cardinals might disagree for the moment. The San Francisco Giants prevailed 6-1 in Game 6 Sunday to force a Game 7. And, as if that wasn’t bad enough, there was the seventh-inning performance of Misa Malone performing — or attempting to perform — “God Bless America.” To be kind, there have been better renditions of the tune.
