Monday meanderings: OK, so the Chicago Bears lost to the Houston Texans 13-6 Sunday night (Nov. 11) at Soldier Field. What do you expect if the defense and/or special teams isn’t going to score at least one touchdown? It’s a little fuzzy what is more disconcerting for the Bears’ offense: that quarterback Jay Cutler suffered a concussion and had to leave the game or that Cutler departed with a 16.7 quarterback rating.
Looks like a winner: Playboy Playmate Jaime Edmondson corrrectly predicted the Texans would prevail over the Bears Sunday night.
* With San Francisco QB Alex Smith also suffering a concussion Sunday, the Nov 19 “Monday Night Football” television extravaganza could feature the 49ers and Bears starting second-string QBs. Sadly for ESPN (if that is the case), there is no backup plan to avoid having to televise a game featuring backups.
* Also suffering a concussion Sunday was Philadelphia’s Michael Vick. If the NFL can’t figure out how to correct this problem, then the folks running the game need to have their heads examined. Once again, your humble correspondent will opine that the NFL needs to revert to softer helmets so that the head no longer will become the launchpad of a human missle but rather something to value. Thank you, but the soapbox is about to give way, so I’ll end it there,
* Phil Jackson apparently will not come out of retirement to coach the Los Angeles Lakers once more. Mike D’Antoni reportedly will. Lakers guard Steve Nash is happy to have his former coach joining the Lakers; Kobe Bryant has said he likes D’Antoni; and center Dwight Howard now will have a chance to go for getting three coaches fired in a year or less.
* If it’s any consolation to Chicago Bulls fans eagerly awaiting the return of star guard Derrick Rose from offseason anterior-cruciate ligament surgery, look nofurther than Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson. He ran for 171 yards Sunday against the Detroit Lions to become the first player this season to rush for 1,000 or more yards. Peterson is coming back from ACL surgery that ended his 2011 season. Well, hopefully that offers some hope for Bulls fans. As for Bears fans? They might be less thrilled in that the Vikings have two games still to be played against the Bears this season.
Speaking of the Bulls, in honor of Veterans Day, the Bulls will have pregame and in-game activities at Monday’s contest against the Boston Celtics. Some active military and veterans attending the game will be using tickets donated by the team, sponsors and season ticket-holders. Some veterans will be on-court for the singing of the national anthem. There also will be “Thank a Vet” stations on the 100 level concourse between Gates 6 and 7 and throught the 300 level concourse so fans can thank the men and women from the Wounded Warrior Prohect for their service. An area veteran will be “Vet of the Game” and be in on the captains meeting at center court before the game.
