Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler is listed as questionable — pending a visit Saturday (Nov. 24) to the doctor — for the team’s game Sunday at home against the Minnesota Vikings. Among the keys to Cutler’s being cleared to play after suffering a concussion Nov. 11 will be his ability to remember. Especially the basics, such as remembering he has a doctor’s appointment and how to get there.
* The biggest uncertainty regarding Cutler is not whether he plays Sunday, but when he will suffer his next concussion.
* Speaking of quarterbacks, San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh — a onetime Bears QB — would not say whether Alex Smith or Colin Kaepernick would start for his team Sunday at New Orleans. Obviously, Harbaugh never has had to put together a fantasy team and figure which players to have active.
* Chicago Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said Friday he will stay with his starting lineup for Saturday’s game at Milwaukee. Apparently Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen of 20 years ago were not available to add to the roster.
* Speaking of the Bulls, former backup center Omer Asik had 18 points and 14 rebounds for the Houston Rockets in a 131-103 victory vs. the visiting New York Knicks. For the season, he is averaging 10.2 points and 11.9 rebounds per game. Bulls center Joakim Noah is averaging 14.5 points and 9.7 rebounds. To think Asik would do half as well with the Bulls might be about right — in that he would have about half the playing time he has had in Houston. Which is to say, while Asik is enjoying more playing time, he also might be enjoying playing under a different style.
* The NHL announced Friday it has canceled games through Dec. 14 and the all-star game Jan. 27 in Columbus, Ohio. The owners’ lockout of the players has canceled 422 games. (more than a third of the season). Rather than focus on the games canceled, why not focus on the positive? Think of all the games still remaining. Well, before they get canceled. OK, short-lived optimism.
No. 1 Notre Dame takes on Southern Cal in a game that matches two of the legendary college football programs. USC was supposed to be the better team this year, but that’s not how things have played out. If it’s any consolation to the Trojans fans, they still have one of the great college fight songs. Then again, so do the Irish.
