NFL Hits & Misses; Pete Rose’s ‘Hits & Mrs.’

January 14, 2013 @ No Comments

Monday meanderings: Any similarity between the Chicago Bears and the football played over the weekend in the NFL’s postseason is purely coincidental. Even if you didn’t have a rooting (and/or betting) interest in the Seattle Seahawks-Atlanta Falcons game or the Baltimore Ravens-Denver Broncos contest, you had to be entertained.

* Defense wins championships. That’s what historically has been said. And in general, that’s true. At the same time, you have to be able to score — regardless of the sport. In football, the importance of offense cannot be understated. As the Falcons’ 30-28 victory over the Seahawks and the New England Patriots’ 41-28 victory over the Houston Texans on Sunday demonstrated. Or Saturday’s games with San Francisco eliminating Green Bay 45-31 and Baltimore beating Denver 38-35. Just a thought for the Bears, who can only hope their new coach can bring an extra touchdown or two a game with him.

* Speaking of scoring, the Bears scored more than 28 points four times in 2012: 41-21 vs. Indianapolis, 34-18 vs. Dallas, 41-3 vs. Jacksonville and 51-20 vs. Tennessee. No playoff teams there. Results against the weekend’s combatants: 23-17 loss to Seattle, 32-7 loss to San Francisco, 13-6 loss to Houston and losses to Green Bay of 23-10 and 21-13. Not only is offensive firepower seemingly necessary in the NFL in the 21st century, it also can be entertaining. Similar to the way the American Football League was during its early years when the NFL was plodding along.

Kiana Kim stars in TLC’s reality show “Pete Rose: Hits & Mrs.”

* Speaking of entertaining, check out “Pete Rose: Hits & Mrs.” on TLC. The reality series features baseball’s all-time hit king Pete Rose, his fiancee Kiana Kim and her son Ashton and daughter Cassie. Who knew there was a human side to Rose, who is banned from baseball for betting on the game when he was manager of the Cincinnati Reds? Kiana and Pete demonstrate good senses of humor. Of course, some folks in the reading audience here might see this mention of the show and think it was merely an excuse to run a photo of Kiana. Not true. Not that it matters. As occasionally cited, one of the joys of running this site is being able to run pretty much what I want when I want (well, provided that I don’t forget to run what I want to run). I have had the pleasure of chatting with Kiana a couple of times when she has been in Chicago, so I’m more than a little biased. She is quite charming — and considerably better-looking than Pete. Anyway, the show is worth a look. And you don’t have to be a baseball fan to enjoy it — although followers of the sport might find the program even more entertaining.

* Speaking of sports with bats and balls (and even if we weren’t), congratulations to Warren Johnson, proprietor of The Levee (whose ad you might notice on the first page of this site) for being named an inductee to the Chicago 16 Inch Softball Hall of Fame. The 17th annual Hall of Fame dinner will be April 13. To see the list of inductees, you can click here.

* Seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong is to sit down Monday with Oprah Winfrey for an interview that is to air Thursday on her network. He reportedly will admit to using performance-enhancing substances. All this after years of denial. As with anyone in such a circumstance, how are we supposed to know when a liar is telling the truth?

While there was footage of Pete Rose at a pool party, the editorial staff at elliottharris.com figures most of those who click onto this site would prefer the site of an attractive female in a bikini. Or some similar attire:

A little something from comedian Caryn Ruby:

Tiger Woods’ former wife Elin appears to be in good form:
