Midweek musings: If you’re a Chicago White Sox fan, the 2013 is way ahead of schedule — as far as discomfort is concerned. In no small part because of concern regarding the discomfort reliever Matt Thornton is feeling in his left elbow. On the bright side, an MRI showed only inflammation. And it is only Feb. 19. On the not-so-bright side, there’s no timetable for the left-hander to resume throwing. Nothing quite like midseason or late-season angst before the first game is even played.
Model Chrissy Teigen always is welcome around here.
* Speaking of elbows and angst, Chicago Bulls guard Kirk Hinrich returned to the lineup after missing seven games. He had 10 assists and three steals in a 96=87 road victory against the New Orleans Hornets. He went 2-for-7 from the field in scoring six points. Given a choice of a guard to the lineup, just guessing Bulls fans would prefer Derrick Rose — even if he can’t dunk.
* Speaking of Bulls guards (OK, a former one), Michael Jordan is not as talented as LeBron James. So said Isiah Thomas on “The Waddle & Silvy Show” on Chicago’s ESPN 1000. “They’re both great players, and they’re both great in their eras. In my era, we hadn’t seen an athlete quite like Michael Jordan. He jumped higher than everyone else. He was a little faster than everyone else and he was just the best athlete. LeBron James is the best athlete of today, and he’s probably a better athlete than Michael Jordan was. He’s bigger, he’s faster, he’s stronger.” Let the record also show Isiah and MJ are not exactly the closest of friends. In case anyone might have forgotten. Isiah did say MJ, who turned 50 on Feb. 17, could score 10 points a game if he came back to play. Well, and if His Airness played 40 minutes.
* The Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Vancouver Canucks 4-3 in a shootout. The Hawks have scored a point in 16 consecutive contests to tie the NHL record to start a season. A reminder to Hawks fans with visions of a Stanley Cup crown: It’s not necessarily how you start a season but how you finish it.
OK, the Bulls haven’t played a home game in a long time (Feb. 11 being the last and Feb. 21 against the Miami Heat being the next). So that means there have been no Luvabulls videos lately. Thankfully, the video department at elliottharris.com has saved some footage from the last home game of the talented dancers. Around here we like to think of providing such wonderfulness as more content to include in our portfolio for submitting in the never-ending effort to win the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service (or whatever its equivalent might be here in cyberspace). It’s Wednesday (well, it is provided that yesterday was Tuesday), so that means we are a day away from the latest instllament of “Sports & Torts” with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris at noon Chicago time on talkzone.com.
The highly acclaimed interview program (well, it’s highly acclaimed in the Spada and Harris households and reportedly elsewhere) will feature Pro Football Hall of Famer John Randle and two lovely ladies who will be participating in the Arnold Sports Festival.
Christina Clausen will be competing in the open figure competition at the annual event that will be Feb. 28-March 3 in Columbus, Ohio. Caryn Paolini will be competing in the Bikini A category in the gathering that attracts participants and patrons from all around the world. Caryn also will be one of 12 finalists in the Rock Star Bikini Contest on Feb. 28.
