Midweek musings: Eight was the magic number for Chicago teams playing Tuesday (June 4) on the West Coast. The Blackhawks’ 3-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings was the Kings’ eighth in their last eight home games. The White Sox’ 7-4 loss to Mariners in Seattle was the visitors’ eighth loss in their last eight games. The Sox had entered the game with losses in their last eight road games. Felix Hernandez struck out eight Sox hitters. And the Cubs’ 4-3 loss to the Angels was a result of Albert Pujols hitting a two-run home run in inning No. 8. Pujols entered the game with eight home runs. Both the Cubs and Angeles recorded eight hits.
* For those fascinated by the number 7, Bryan Bickell scored the sole goal in Game 3 for the Hawks. He has 7 this postseason. For those still fascinated by the number 7 in losing causes, Sox right-hander Jake Peavy allowed seven hits in 2 1/3 innings before departing with pain in his left ribs.
* Speaking of Bickell, some folks posted so enthusiastically about Bickell’s goal that you would have thought it counted as four or more.
* Speaking of numbers, remember Sox catcher Tyler Flowers, who faced only seven pitches in going 0-for-3 against the Mariners on Monday? Well, he went 1-for-3 Tuesday — on five pitches. At this rate, his at-bats will be over before any pitches are thrown.
* Everyone who thought when the baseball season began that the Angels and Cubs would have the same number of losses on June 5 — 33 — may take the rest of the day off.
* Anyone (well, with the exception of Cubs fans) who thought when the baseball season began that the White Sox would be closer to last place in their division than the Cubs would be in theirs on June 5 also may take the rest of the day off.
* Somehow this space failed to mention in Tuesday’s posting that Brooklyn Nets guard Jason Kidd is retiring after 19 seasons. He was co-rookie of the year with Grant Hill, who also is retiring. For those who watched the Chicago Bulls play the Nets in the 2013 postseason, some of us thought Kidd was retired — even if he was on the court from time to time in a Nets uniform.
If it’s Wednesday (which some of us around here are fairly confident that is it — mainly because yesterday was Tuesday, provided that you are reading this on June 5, 2013, or a subsequent Wednesday), then it is almost time for another edition of “Sports & Torts” with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris on Talkzone.com at noon Central.
Among the interview guests on the June 6 show is Playboy’s June Playmate Audrey Aleen Allen. She is a native of Colorado who figures to provide a Rocky Mountain high for those who tune in.
Also appearing on the program are a pair of Pro Football Hall of Fame players: Willie Lanier (the standout at linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs) and Eric Dickerson (the oustanding running back whose greatest success was with the Los Angeles Rams).
The show also will become later in the day Thursday.
And for those who believe we are mentioning Audrey Aleen Allen purely for the purpose of running photos and/or video of her, this is not totally accurate. Maybe 90 percent or so accurate, but not 100 percent. As if it matters.
