It was an unusual doubleheader for your humble correspondent: bowling and softball. Simultaneously, too, for the most part. And part party as well. Hey, what else is a person supposed to do on a Wednesday night?
First up in Rosemont, Ill., at Kings Bowl was the second Charles Tillman Celebrity Pro BOWLer Tournament. The event benefitted the Chicago Bears defennsive back’s Cornerstone Foundation that raises money to help ill children and their families. There was a good crowd at the fund-raiser with several familiar faces ranging from Jarrett Payton and Marques Sullivan of football fame to restaurateur Mike O’Malley to ESPN Radio’s Sarah Spain and The Heckler’s Brad Zibung (they still remain the media couple of the year for the — gee, I’ve lost track of how many — year) and Bears.com senior writer Larry Mayer. Emceee for the event was WSCR’s Matt Abbatacola.
Several of Tillman’s teammates — present and past — were on hand, too. Matt Forte, Adrian Peterson, Johnny Knox, Shea McClellin, Patrick Mannelly, Tim Jennings and Alex Brown, among others were there to show off their bowling skills. So was former NBA standout Antoine Walker. My apologies to any and all not mentioned here, but participating in such an event should serve as some satisfaction for doing a good deed.
As difficult as it was to leave the fun and frivolity amid the bowling (not to mention leaving the food and drink), next it was off to the nearby Ballpark at Rosemont, one of the true testament to mayor Brad Stephens’ vision for the village and a monument to the forward thinking that he has shown. If ever there was a template for a softball stadium, Rosemont has it.
As fate (and the Bandits’ performance) would have it, by the time I arrive at the ballpark, the Bandits were well on their way to a 7-1 victory against the Akron Racers. Rookie Andi Williamson, a West Virginia native who starred at Marshall University, was impressive in her pitching debut in going the distance. It didn’t hurt that the Bandits turned double plays behind her.
Vicky Galindo broke a 1-all tie with a run-scoring single and Megan Wiggins, who scored the game’s first run in the first inning, had a three-round double in a five-run fourth inning.
The Bandits play again Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Star pitcher Monica Abbott, who arrived in Chicago shortly before Wednesday’s game, is not expected to be on the mound Thursday.
Charles Tillman before he hits the lanes to bowl in his Cornerstone Foundation event:
It is time for another edition of “Sports & Torts” with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris on Talkzone.com. Well, it is if today is Thursday, which seems fairly likely — provided yesterday was Wednesday.
The guests on the June 6 show include June 2013 Playboy Playmate Audbrey Aleen Allen. She definitely merits a AAA rating — on the initials of her name alone. Also on the 60-minute interview program are Pro Football Hall of Fame players Willie Lanier (former middle linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs) and Eric Dickerson (former running back best remembered for his seasons with the Los Angeles Rams).
For those who are unable to tune in for the live show (and/or for those who would like an encore performance), the interviews will becaome available later in the day via podcast at talkzone.com.
Here is where we go for our daily dose of non-gratuitous (because of the hard work of the editorial and video departments at elliottharriscom and those departments’ definition of “gratuitous”):
