Random thoughts while wondering whether the White Sox have any players that will interest another team enough so that they can actually make a trade of some (OK, any) consequence:
* For those who care about the number of pitches a batter sees per plate appearance, Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo was at the plate five times and lasted all of 15 pitches. Left fielder Alfonso Soriano went up there five times and lasted all of 16 pitches. Rizzo went 0-for-5 with two strikeouts; Soriano 3-for-4 with a strikeout and a walk. Anyone who can make sense out of all that has greater statistical-analytical skills far beyond those of mere mortals.
* With an 8-2 victory Monday (July 8) at U.S. Cellular Field, the Cubs improved to 4-0 against the White Sox this season. If the Sox had swept the four-game series, their record would be 38-48 instead of 34-52 and the Cubs would be 35-52 instead of 39-48. Meaning both teams still would be bad and look toward the future and away from this season.
* Speaking of this season, it likely will be considered a success if the Cubs can trade right-hander Matt Garza (who had another effective outing Monday) for a legitimate prospect or prospects.
* Speaking of legitimate prospects and the Cubs, shortstop Starlin Castro is batting .233, Rizzo .239 and second baseman Darwin Barney .214. Wait till next year or next generation of prospects, Cubs fans?
* Speaking of waiting, how long before Sox manager Robin Ventura and the Sox come up with an exit strategy that frees him from managing the team and manages to save face for both the team and for him?
* Speaking of young talent that actually is achieving a high level of success, Chicago Sky rookie forward Elene Delle Donne was named WNBA Eastern Conference player of the week for the second consecutive time. Fairly impressive, considering she had what she described as her worst game on any level in a loss to the Seattle Storm last week.
* Speaking of the SKy (which has a Wednesday home game at 11:30 a.m. against the Washington Mystics at Allstate Arena in Rosemont), forward Swin Cash is poised to receive some additional exposure beyond the basketball court. She is in ESPN the Magazine’s annual body issue for the second year in a row. The issue comes out Friday. The three-time WNBA champion was gracious enough after a recent practice to chat with your humble correspondent:
