If the highlight of your team’s baseball season is trading away a talented veteran for unproven talent, then you just might be a Chicago baseball fan. Take your choice of teams. And we’re not even talking about waiting till next season. Maybe 2015 (too soon?). More like 2016. And that’s just for the Cubs or White Sox to finish in the top half of their division.
* By the time you read this, Alfonso Soriano likely will have been traded officially to the New York Yankees. The left fielder said farewell to his Cubs teammates after sitting out a 3-1 loss to the host Arizona Diamondbacks. Just guessing he will be retired before the Cubs are close to challenging for a postseason berth.
* Meanwhile, Sox pitcher Jake Peavy pitched impressively in a 7-4 victory against the visiting Detroit Tigers. Impressively enough to be traded. The Sox likely will try to make a deal before Peavy’s next start (which also is his next time to injure himself).
* With Atlanta pitcher Tim Hudson breaking an ankle Wednesday and being lost for the rest of the season, some people think the Braves will be the landing spot for Peavy. The reality is Peavy would be one — but not the only one — of the pitchers the Braves might go after. And that’s assuming they will be going after a pitcher and willing to part with top talent.
* Speaking of top talent, Derrick Rose was asked who the best player in the NBA is “right now,” The Bulls guard, who missed the 2012-13 season because he was recuperating from anterior cruciate ligament surgery, said he is. OK, he’s either delusional or he means he is at least as good as any other player during the offseason. Once everyone returns to the basketball court, LeBron James and Kevin Durant — to name two — are better. Until proven otherwise.
* Chicago Bears general manager Phil Emery said the team will have no in-season extensions. Not even for cornerback Charles Tillman’s hair maybe? Oh, Emery was talking contract extensions. In that case, never mind. On the bright side, we don’t have to have endure story after story regarding quarterback Jay Cutler’s contract status.
* The Chicago Luvabulls dance team will hold auditions on Aug. 10 at the United Center. You can find out more details by clicking here. Ad for those who believe we are running a mention of the audtions merely to justify running a Luvabulls photo, remember we don’t need to justify, rationalize or anything else. Ah, the joys of running your own web site.
If it’s Friday (or any day of the week ending in “d-a-y”), then here is where to go for non-gratuitous video (thanks to the daily diligence of the editorial and video staffs at elliottharris.com that do not know the meaning of a day off, or “gratuitous” and a bunch of other words, too):
