Can’t Beat Fun at the Ballpark? Radio Comes Close

August 14, 2013 @ No Comments

Let’s say you were driving a triple-digit distance Tuesday night. And as you traveled, you came across the radio broadcast of one of your favorite teams. You listened. And drove. And listened. And drove.

For those who missed Wizard World Chicago, here is incentive to attend in 2014.

On this particular night, it was a baseball game that game went ito extra innings. And you listened. And drove. And listened. And drove. Many miles. Several innings in a game that goes into extra innings. The ballgame, which surely was going to be over before you reached your destination, now may outlast the drive.

You exit the expressway for a local street mere blocks from home. And, as you exit, an unexpected hero emerges. The ballgame ends. Your team prevails. If ever there ws a sign that some sort of cosmic force exists in the universe — and even better — is a fan of the ballclub that you root for.

Of course, similar scenarios do occur without your team winninng. But the reason for that generally is because the aforementioned cosmic force wasn’t paying attention for some inexplicable reason.

Of course, none of the previous makes rational sense. Randomness — rather than fate of you actually having an influence on the outcome of a contest by tuning in for it — would seem to be the reason for any linkage. But some of us do like to delude ourselves into thinking somehow there is a connection.

The Chicago Sky lost a game Monday to the host Los Angeles Sparks 80-76. More than that, the Sky lost Elena Delle Donne to injury. For how long? It’s unclear as this is being typed. The leading candidate for WNBA rookie of the year had eight of her nine points in the first quarter before exiting in the second with an injured left foot.

Her presence in the lineup is uncertain at the team’s busiest month of the season. Her presence is guaranteed (or as close as we can do something like that) at being on the Aug. 15 “Sports & Torts” at noon Central time on Talkzone.com with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris. If things go according to plan (and occasionally they do), taped interviews with Delle Donne and basketball legend Oscar Robertson will be the guests.
