Monday meanderings: Once upon a time (or at least a few decades ago when some of us were much younger), Labor Day meant — along with parades and politicians embracing the working man and woman — doubleheaders. Two games for the price of one. A working person’s dream. Or at least a frugal working person’s dream — provided that you happened to be a baseball fan. And who wasn’t? When some of us were young, there was no such thing as fantasy football. Or video games. Or cable television. Or a variety of other 21st century diversions. As we take a pause (for those working and enjoying the day off, for those unemployed and in search of working once again, for everyone who is taking the time to read this), here is to yesterday, today and tomorrow. Who knew that watching the “Hot in Cleveland” marathon on TVland could cause such introspection.

* Labor Day also signaled to baseball fans the pennant races were in their final stretch. Nowadays it’s about the chase for the wild card. This season there isn’t even all that much drama for which teams will be in the postseason. So much for creating additional interest.
* Congratulations to the Chicago Bliss for defeating the Philadelphia Passion 34-18 to capture the Legends Football League title in Las Vegas. That’s the league formerly known as the Lingerie Football League before the LFL altered its name (and to a lesser extent player uniforms by eliminating the lace and garters from what pretty much appeared to be a bra and panties outfit). Ironic, isn’t it, that the league suffers from a lack of exposure?
* Speaking of winning championships, neither the Chicago Cubs or White Sox will capture one this season. Or quite possibly much longer. The folks at coolstandings.com rate both teams with a 0.0 percent chance of a playoff berth in 2013.
* The White Sox lost 7-6 to the Boston Red Sox in Fenway Park. White Sox catcher Tyler Flowers hit his 10th home run of the season. The question is whether Flowers (hitting .195) will reach 100 total bases (he has 91) before he reaches 100 strikeouts (he has 94).
* The Cubs defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 7-1 at Wrigley Field to extend their winning streak to two games. If they can win 20 more in a row, they will be 78-78. And the chances of that happening are about the same as Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg making a comeback as a second baseman.
