Midweek musings: Well, you have to admit the Chicago White Sox are showing improvement. As long as you aren’t expecting a victory. The Sox, who gave up eight runs in an inning in losing on Labor Day, gave up five runs in the eighth inning Tuesday (Sept. 3), as the host New York Yankees prevailed 6-4 after trailing 4-1. Hardly a preferred definition of “progress.” But it’s apparently the best the Sox can do on short — or any — notice.
* Sox left-hander Chris Sale was the victim of a bullpen breakdown, but he has some culpability in throwing 114 pitchers in 7 1/3 innings of five-hit ball with only one walk. Part of the problem is hitters’ patience (not to be confused with Sox shortstop Alexei Ramirez, who faced eight pitches total in four at-bats or right fielder Jordan Danks with nine pitches faced in four at-bats)
* Speaking of starting pitchers, Cubs right-hander Edwin Jackson was the loser in a 6-2 Miami Marlins victory at Wrigley Field. He did tie a career high. Unfortunately for him and the Cubs, it was for losses: 15. Which is about as close as either he or the team is going to come to having anything approximating a magic number.
* Speaking of magic numbers, the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Brewers in Milwaukee 4-3. The Pirates (81-57) will finish at .500 or better for the first time since 1992 when they were 96-66. Pirates fans would have to be considered long-suffering — unless perhaps if you’re a Cubs fan.
* Speaking of Pittsburgh, I believe that is where Annette Kurson is from. I may be wrong about that. I am certain of this: She was a remarkable woman. She was the mother of three terrific childen — Jane, Robert and Ken — who turned into amazing adults. Like many people, I always felt smarter — and happier — after being in her presence and listening to her talk about a wide range of topics. Annette Kurson died Tuesday. She was not a blood relative; but after learning of her death, you could have fooled my heart.
If this is Wednesday (and it’s so confusing with Monday having been Labor Day, so yesterday seemed like Monday and today seems like Tuesday — provided that you are reading this Sept. 4, 2013, or a subsequent Wednesday), then it is almost time for “Sports & Torts” on Talkzone.com with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris.
The interview show airs on Thursdays at noon Central time. If things go as planned (which they occasionally do on the program), one of the guests will be someone who was on about this time last year. In that the person concerned is Playboy Playmate Pilar Lastra (one of the briefcase models on “Deal or No Deal”). As a fantasy football expert (being a five-time champion qualifies you for that description), Pilar will be able to talk about a timely topic. She is part of “Every Man’s Fantasy,” a fantasy football program with Jeff Mans that airs on SiriusXM.
