Thursday thoughts (or what passes for thinking around here): With their loss Wednesday, the Chicago White Sox (56-82) are assured of a losing record this season. With their victory Wednesday, the Chicago Cubs can retain hopes for having a .500 season — as long as they go 22-1 to finish the season. OK, so a 56-80 record isn’t much, but the Cubs would have to go 1-22 to do worse than last season.
* The poster boy — OK, the poster shortstop — for impatience at the plate is Alexei Ramirez of the White Sox. He was hitless in five at-bats during which he saw a grand total of eight pitches. Then again, maybe he merely was trying to be like Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano, who saw eight pitches in four at-bats. The biggest difference? Cano was 3-for-4, including a home run, and drove in two runs.
* Cubs starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija received a no-decision in the 9-7 victory against the Miami Marlins at Wrigley Field. Meaning he and left-hander Travis Wood are tied for the team lead in victories. Each is 8-11. Meaning the possibility exists that the Cubs could have no pitchers with double-digit victory totals at season’s end.
* Speaking of the Cubs and pitching, they claimed Boston Red Sox right-hander Daniel Bard on waivers. Bard was drafted by Boston when Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein was the Red Sox general manager and Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer was the Red Sox assistant general manager. If it’s any consolation to Cubs fans (and the guess here is that is most likely isn’t), Bard once was good.
If it’s Thursday (and the chances seem excellent in that yesterday was Wednesday — provided that you are reading this on Sept. 5, 2013, or a subsequent Thursday), then it is time for another edition of “Sports & Torts” on Talkzone.com with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris.
The highly acclaimed interview show (well, it is held in such high regard in the Spada and Harris households, as well as reportedly elsewhere), which airs at noon Central time (and also becomes available later in the day via podcast on Talkzone.com), will have a football theme on the Sept. 5 program.
The featured guests are Playboy Playmate Pilar Lastra (you may have seen her recently promoting fantasy football in Miller Lite commercials) and Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive back Mel Renfro. Pilar is a fantasy football expert who will provide insight and advice for the 2013 NFL season.
Here is where to go for a daily dose of non-gratuitous video (thanks to the endless efforts of the editorial and video departments at elliottharris.com). We are pleased to feature one of our favorites, April Rose, in another of her “Maximum Exposure” episodes:
