Hot in Cleveland? Try Cavs Guard Irving

November 10, 2013 @ No Comments

Sunday smorgasbord: For those hoping to see a guard with incredible skills and Most Valuable Player ability at the United Center, there will be Monday’s Chicago Bulls game. He will be playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers. His name is Kyrie Irving, and he had 39 points, 12 assists and the game-winning basket in the Cavs’ 127-125 double-overtime victory Saturday against the visiting Philadelphia 76ers. Maybe playing against Iring will bring out the best in Bulls guard Derrick Rose’s game. And, yes, that sentiment comes directly from the department of wishful thinking.

Miss Venezuela Gabriela Isler is the new Miss Universe.

* Notre Dame lost to Pitt 29-21 because the Panthers dominated time of possession and made no turnovers to three for the Irish, And because Notre Dame was unable to play catsup — I mean catchup — at Heinz Field.

* Maybe it was a long day of watching college football on television. Maybe it was the fact that it was after midnight. Whatever the cause, I could have sworn the midnight edition of Comcast SportsNet’s “SportsNet Central” included some Bears coverage with Kelly Crull saying (and a graphic to back up her comments) that Bears running back Matt Forte has rushed for more yards than Detroit Lions running back Reggie Bush. So true (658 yards to 518) — although yards per carry might have been a more accurate measuring stigck. Mainly because Forte has carried the ball 140 times and Bush 119. A more meaningful stat might be yards per carry (Forte’s 4.7 to Bush’s 4.4).

* Speaking of the Lions, Calvin Johnson needs 24 receiving yards against the Bears to move past Randy Moss for the second-most yards in the first 100 games of a player’s NFL career. Lance Alworth tops the list with 9,019 yards, followed by Moss (8,680), Johnson (8,657 in 99 games), Torry Holt (8,598) and Jerry Rice (8,488). Something says Johnson will have no problem reach that goal. Something also says the Bears would settle for limiting to Johnson to 124 yards.

* Northwestern won a game on another busy college football Saturday. Well, the football team actually had the day off, but Chris Collins won his debut 72-55 as Wildcats coach against Eastern Illinois. So at least Collins will have a victory heading into his second game Nov. 17 against Illinois State, alma mater of Doug Collins, Chris’ father who was on hand to witness another generation of the family becoming a head coach.

* Congratulations to the new Miss Universe, Gabriela Isler. Think of this as a public service to all who might have been watching college football Saturday night. And also as justification for running her photo and video (as if any justification is needed around here).

For many people, Sunday is a day of rest. Or watching football, which can make people more restless than rested. For some of us, Sunday is much like any other day. Which means exactly this: Voting for “Sports & Torts” in the Podcastawards.com contest. The weekly interview show – co-hosted by David Spada and Elliott Harris — airs on Thursdays at noon Central time on Talkzone.com.

Voting is reasonably quick and painless, so it should not interfere with any other activities you might have planned.

“Sports & Torts” is among 10 finalists for best sports podcast. Voting remains open for your favorite sports podcast. OK, my favorite sports podcast. And David’s, too. Hopefully, yours as well.

And even if it isn’t your favorite, we are asking for your support. All you have to do is go to podcastawards.com and vote. After you vote, you will receive an email confirming your vote. Your vote will not count unless you respond to the email. If you don’t see the voting verification email, check out your spam or junk email folder (that’s where mine continue to go — but at least I’m doing better at remember to look there).

Thank you in advance for your vote or votes. As with any election involving anything Chicago-related, you are encouraged to vote early and often. The main difference between this and an actual Chicago election is multiple votes from a person (presumably still living) is permitted for the Podcast Awards. You are allowed to vote once a day. To vote, click here. Among our competition are sites from ESPN and CBS, so we need to battle the behemoths. We feel good about doing so — especially with your assistance. Stay tuned. Voting continues through Nov. 15. And thank you once again.
