Let Me Know When Bears Have New Coach

Midweek musings: There’s nothing quite like the excitement generated among Chicago Bears fans by reports that an experienced NFL head coach is interviewing for the Bears’ job. In no small part because team management has nothing quite like a track record of hiring experienced head coaches. As in the next coach with previous employment as an NFL head coach to be hired by the Bears will be about as common as a Bears Super Bowl crown.

* OK, so the Bears did hire one coach who had been an NFL coach. Paddy Driscoll coached the Bears (1956-57) after having been Chicago Cardinals coach (1920-22). For what that’s worth. Which probably isn’t much.

* So what should Bears fans make of the reports that John Fox, who this week departed the Denver Broncos under curious circumstances (meaning Denver was willing — if not eager — to see him exit despite reaching the AFC championship game this season), is going to talk with the Bears? It would be dumb for Fox not to talk to teams seeking a coach. Whether it would be dumb to hire him is another story — one that would unfold in 2015 and beyond.

* Speaking of NFL coaches interested in the Bears opening, Doug Barrone — who opted out of his contract with the Buffalo Bills after the 2014 season — has spoken with Bears management. He and Bears general manager Ryan Pace have a relationship going back to their days with the New Orleans Saints. For whatever that’s worth.

* Speaking of former NFL coaches, Thursday’s edition of “Sports & Torts” at noon Central time on Talkzone.com with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris will feature Charley Winner, who coached the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Jets. Podcast of the show will be available later Thursday at the Talkzone.com web site.

* Bears teammates Martellus Bennett and Kyle Long feuding on Twitter? That never happened when Mike Ditka was coach. Mainly because there was no Twitter at that point in the 20th century.

* The Washington Wizards visit the United Center on Wednesday to play the Bulls, whom they defeated last week in Washington. The Wizards beat the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday to end a 17-game losing streak against them. Meaning the Wizards are on a roll. Either that or they will be tired.
