More Than Luck Involved in Colts-Jaguars

December 29, 2011 @ No Comments

Thursday thoughts:

The Indianapolis Colts (2-13) and Jacksonville Jaguars (4-11) meet Sunday in an NFL matchup of cosmic importance. Well, possibly to Colts and Jaguars fans. Although a Colts victory could cost them a shot at Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck and mean the Jaguars wouldn’t have to face him regularly in the AFC South, both teams say they will play to win. Because the next time you hear a team saying it is playing not to win will be the first time. And also because to say so would threaten whatever integrity you might believe there is in sports.

Andrea Metcalf is to appear on "Sports & Torts."

* Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, who has been sidelined by a fractured thumb on his throwing hand, is an alternate for the NFC in the Pro Bowl. The only person who might want to see Cutler in Honolulu for the Jan. 29 game could be girlfriend Kristin Cavallari — assuming she doesn’t have a previous engagement (commercial — not marital — variety).

* Bear receiver Roy Williams, who has not had a good season, says he would like to return to the Bears. Well, unless someone else wants to come along with a better offer. And the chances of that are tough to grasp. Kind of like more than a few football that came Williams’ way during the season.

* Tennessee Titans coach Mike Munchak, a former Penn State lineman, says he has no intention to replace Joe Paterno as Nittany Lions coach. The guess here would be Penn State is looking for someone with a hands-on approach — though not in the manner of alleged child abuser/former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.

Maybe Andrea Metcalf will wear this on "Sports & Torts." Hey, a guy can dream, can't he?

* Alex Rodriguez has gone to Germany for treatment to deal with his knee and shoulder. Because the New York Yankees third baseman will be able to deny any failed drug tests with a nein-nein-nein plan (OK, so he’s no Herman Cain).

* The thought of the Chicago Cubs dealing right-hander Matt Garza for prospects fails to raise hopes for the Cubs’ 2012 prospects in the NL Central. Maybe the Cubs and White Sox can compete to see which team can tear down its 2011 roster the quickest. The trick will be rebuilding one to challenge any time soon.

* Happy birthday to elliottharris.com West Coast correspondent/artist/bon vivant Mark Harris. A father could not ask for a better son. Well, he could ask, but he wouldn’t find one.

Fitness guru Andrea Metcalf is the author of Naked Fitness. She will be an in-studio guest on the Dec. 29 “Sports & Torts” show with David Spada and Elliott Harris at noon (Chicago time) at talkzone.com. Thankfully for viewers of the program, the co-hosts will not be naked. Sadly for some viwers of the program, neither will Andrea. Not that the co-hosts would object (although their wives might not be in total agreement with that approach).

OK, how about some video featuring Andrea:
