Bulls Victorious; Azarenka Also

January 28, 2012 @ No Comments

For a team about to embark on a nine-game road trip, the Chicago Bulls gave their home fans a little something to remember them by. Derrick Rose scored a season-high 34 points in a 107-100 victory against the Milwaukee Bucks.

VIctoria Azarenka wore a different outfit in winning the Australian Open.

“We’re taking it one game at a time.” Rose told reporters after Friday’s game. “We know that it is going to be very hard. We know that we are going to have to play together, even though we are down some players (Richard “Rip” Hamilton and Luol Deng did not play vs. the Bucks). So we have to execute while we’re out there and play hard and compete every time we step on the court.”

Among the evening’s other highlights:

* The victory and scoring 100+ points while achieving it meant the United Center fans won Big Macs. It remains unclear whether the prospect of free food or the prospect of a victory was of greater concern to the fans — although the Big Mac promo does seem to receive serious attention from folks hungry for more than victory.

* Attending the game was former White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, who received some boos when he was shown on the overhead scoreboard’s screen. Hey, as long as he is in town, maybe he will stop by SoxFest and wish his successor and former teammate Robin Ventura luck.

* Also in the audience was Evanston native/actor Jeremy Piven. He received polite cheers when he was shown on the video board. Piven also participated in shooting T-shirts into the crowd during a fourth-quarter timeout. He did not appear to have an entourage with him.

Victoria Azarenka defeated Maria Sharapova 6-3, 6-0 to win the Australian Open women’s title. The match ended about 4 a.m. Chicago time. Some of us were awake to witness Azarenka’s domination. For those who were not (OK, and even for those who were), here is some video featuring the world’s No.1 female player:
