If Paul Konerko was any hotter, he would spontaneously combust. The Chicago White Sox first baseman has been anything but a bust at the plate this season. Konerko (.399 batting average in 2012) has 23 hits in his last 36 at-bats in his last 10 games. Included in that span are five home runs and 14 runs batted in. Konerko was 2-for-4 Sunday with the 400th homer with the Sox and 407th of his career. Of the prospect of a big-league player hitting .400, Kornerko said, “”The only way I could see it happening is if a guy has one of those years where he was hurt the whole year but just qualified.” Something says the Sox postseason hopes would be greatly diminished if Konerko spend considerable time on the disabled list.
* Speaking of impressive-hitting first baseman, Anthony Rizzo was taken out of the Iowa Cubs lineup Sunday, and all of a sudden, there was a sense of possible optimism among Chicago Cubs fandom. After all, Rizzo is hitting .354 with 17 homers. Well, until it was reported a sore right wrist was the reason for Rizzo’s early exit and not some callup to the big club. Sounds like The Big Hurt, North Side variety.
* Speaking of “The Big Hurt,” Frank Thomas — who celebrated his 44th birthday on Sunday — is the Sox all-time franchise leader in homers with 448. Meaning Konerko should break the franchise record in 2013 — unless Konerko somehow improves his homer frequency this season.
* Speaking of big hurts (emotional/psychological division), Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte has a video showing him pulling a 100-pound sled up a hill. Someone should tell Forte that he’s in a contract negotiation with a team that will rely more its passing game and less on him as a runner/receiver. Someone also should tell Forte that he’s in a contract negotiation and not a popularity contest.
* Speaking of the Bears, the blouse that Sarah Kustok wore on “Sports Sunday” on Chicago’s Ch. 5 Sunday night sure looked like it was Bears orange. Not that anyone is complaining. Merely an observation. The Comcast SportsNet Chicago personality should benefit from Comcast’s acquisition of NBC. Here’s hoping she goes on to bigger and better things — without diminishing her on-air time for her Chicago fans.
Congratulations to Katherine Legge for finishing 22nd in the Indianapolis 500 Sunday. She made history by becoming the first female driver with an all-female crew in the race.
Speaking of congratulations, belated ones to all who competed in the Chi-town Showdown May 19 at Bolingbrook High. OK, maybe we already have congratulated all the participants. But the editorial staff at elliottharris.com was looking for a reason to run some footage from the event that still are in video vault (not that there really needs to be a whole lot of justification or rationalization to run any such videos).
So here you go:
Speaking of bikinis and horse racing (OK, even if we weren’t, here is something from the Preakness that might be of interest to some folks out there in cyberspace):
