Spike in Interest: Olympic Volleyball and More

August 2, 2012 @ No Comments

The great thing about beach volleyball at the Olympic Games in London — well, for the women’s competition — is you can view and have a tremendous appreciation for the competitors without being able to speak their language. Of curse, you still can have that appreciation even if you speak the same language.

London weather has been too brisk for Kerri Walsh Jennings to wear an outfit like this at the Olympics.

Which brings us to the U.S. team of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings. The Americans lost their first set in Olympic competition but defeated Austria’s Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger 17-21, 21-8, 15-10 on Wednesday (Aug. 1).

The Americans are the two-time defending gold medalists at the Games. They had won two matches at the London Games — meaning 16 matches overall and 32 sets — before losing a set at the Olympics.

“We came out a little bit flat and you can never ever come out flat in Olympic competition,” Walsh Jennings said. “Now the fun begins.

“We’re going to see where the draw puts us. We have four more matches to win to become gold medalists, that’s our goal.”

Speaking of volleyball, here is a commercial in Portuguese — language barrier not a problem in conveying the message — with model Gisele Bundchen and Brazilian volleyball standout Jacqueline “Jacque” Carvalho, who plays the indoor game (also fun to watch and providing justification for running the video — as if rationalizing around here actually is necessary):

Speaking of models, there will be some of the non-volleyball variety this weekend in the Chicago area. All worthy of gold medals, according to the medal-awarding department at elliottharris.com. The action will occuring at Glamourcon on Saturday and Sunday (Aug. 4-5) at the Crowne Plaza O’Hare – Chicago, 5440 N. River Rd. in Rosemont (across from the Stephens Convention Center).

Playboy Playmate Beth Williams will be posing at Glamourcon.

Among the activities at the event (general admission is $25) is a special Playboy-themed event that will feature Playmates Beth Williams (August, 2012), Shelby Chesnes (July, 2012) and Jessa Hinton (July, 2011) posing for folks who purchase the opportunity to be part of a Playboy photo session from 4-7 p.m. Saturday.

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Jeff Cohen (former executive editor of Playboy Special Editions) and Gary Cole (former director of photography for Playboy) will review and critique photos or portfolios of attending, aspiring photographers. Each review will last about 30 minutes. Persons signing up for the review and critique should bring either printed portfolios or electronic portfolios on their computers.

Getting back to the models (who will pose in lingerie — the publicity for the event says “sexy lingerie” but it would be hard to imagine any of the three Playmates in lingerie and not being sexy), Beth is 25 and is in the July/August double issue that is available on newsstands.

She grew up on a dairy farm (which means some of us will try to milk this item for as much as humanly possible) in rural Ohio. Beth has two bachelor’s degrees from Ohio University and a master’s degree in health-care administration from Walden University.

“I might go back and get a doctorate so I can teach,” she said.

First, however, she is pursuing modeling opportunities with the idea of saving some money to finance her aspiration of opening a nursing home (she’s a licensed nursing home administrator).

“My mom and aunts are nurses, and my sister is a physical therapist. The idea would be to have all of them work there with me.”

Somehow the idea of ending up someday in a nursing home doesn’t sound quite as bad as it did before those two previous sentences.

To check out the details of the Playboy event, you can click here. If this item doesn’t merit consideration for the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service (or whatever the online equivalent might be), it’s hard to imagine what does.

Details regarding Glamourcon and its participants can be found by clicking here.

If the photo-research department at elliottharris.com can find the time, pictures of Shelby and Jessa might show up around here in the next day or two.

There always is room around here for a photo of figure competitor Chaya Boone.

By now you’re aware today is Thursday. Well, hopefully you are. Tomorrow being Friday, the editorial staff at elliottharris.com has determined with greater than 99 percent certainty that today indeed is Thursday. Meaning it is time once again for the weekly edition of “Sports & Torts” with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris at noon Chicago time on talkzone.com.

The highly acclaimed interview program (well, it certainly is praised in the Spada and Harris households at the very least) will featured figure competitor Chaya Boone and former football standout Fred “The Hammer” Williamson. Chaya recently launched a new Facebook page, IFBB Figure Pro Chaya Boone, which you can access by clicking here.

Williamson went from being a standout offensive player at Northwestern to becoming a top defensive back in the American Football League with the Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland Raiders. He then went on to a successful career as an actor and director in television and movies. It’s a career that he still continues today. Among his many roles was that of “Spearchucker” Jones in the 1970 movie “M*A*SH” that inspired the long-running television series of the same name.

There is always room around here for an Ashley Kaltwasser photo. Especially one of the bikini pro taken by the talented Don Bersano.

Speaking of launching Facebook pages, bikini competitor Ashley Kaltwasser — a lovely young woman whom your humble correspondent had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing at the Arnold Classic festivities in March in Columbus, Ohio — has started Ashley Kaltwasser IFBB Bikini Pro. You can access Ashley’s page by clicking here.

For those who think this mention is being included solely for the purpose of running a photo from photographer/friend Don Bersano, the visual-image selection department at elliottharris.com would like to disagree. It is not the only reason for using the image. Is it a major reason for running the mention. The visual-image selection department at elliottharris.com had left for the day to answer any questions. Efforts to reach anyone by email and/or phone calls did provide a reasonable response to such an inquiry. Although the answer — “It’s for me to know and you to find out” — may be lacking slightly in professionalism. Thank goodness, the photo of Ashley is nothing but professionalism — in front of and behind the camera.

Hey, here’s some video from Ashley, too:
