If you had an appetite for football, there was something better on the menu than the Miami Dolphins-Buffalo Bills game Thursday night (Nov. 15). OK, maybe the contest, which the Bills won 19-14, could serve as an appetizer. For our taste, the main course had to be Eddie Payton’s presence at a book store to promote his recently released Walter and Me.
Eddie, a former NFL player and the brother of Chicago Bears legend Walter Payton, was at the Book Stall at Chestnut Court in Winnetka, Ill., and was as impressive in his performance as Walter once was on the footbal field. Eddie’s story-telling skills are definitely Hall of Fame caliber. Even better, he seemed genuinely happy to answer any question that members in the audience had.
Because of a whirlwind schedule, Eddie was unable to make it to the “Sports & Torts” studios at talkzone.com for an interview, but co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris are hoping Eddie will have time to stop by when he is town next.
In the meantine, here is some video from the event at the legendary establishment owned and operated (with considerable assistance from a top-notch staff) by legendary Roberta Rubin. Plus a brief chat with Eddie after the event:
Friday follies:
* Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher was asked about whether he lied about suffering concussions during games. And, of course, the answer is he has. Urlacher merely is doing his best to reinforce the concept that athletes are not — or should not be — role models.
* Speaking of Urlacher and concussions, he did say concussed Bears quarterback Jay Cutler — who did not practice Thursday — watched him play table tennis and did not play table tennis. Questions — and answers — don’t get much more exciting than that when there’s media access at Halas Hall.
* Speaking of Cutler, he wasn’t speaking publicly. Meaning he did not appear on his own show that is part of ESPN Radio’s “Waddle & Silvy” program. So now Cutler won’t even talk to himself?
* Of all the Bears players who say Houston Texans linebacker Tim Dobbins’ hit that concussed Cutler was not clean, you have to wonder whether they’d have the same view if one of their teammates did the same thing to an opposing QB.
* The Chicago Cubs have signed catcher Dioner Navarro to a one-yearcontract. Which means the team has another guy to squat behind the plate to receive any pitches that fail to hit opponent bats.
* Comcast SportsNet will have three “Chicago Blackhawks Classics” telecasts beginning Friday (Nov. 16) at 7 p.m. that features the 1971 “Hockey Night in Canada” telecast of the Hawks against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The footage is in black and white for any viewers with any concerns about their televisions. Also scheduled are Nov. 20 with the 1991 NHL All-Star Game and Nov. 27 with the Winter Classic against Detroit at Wrigley Field. Given current commissioner Gary Bettman’s suggestion that negotiations in the league’s labor impasse take a two-week moratorium, this likely will be the only Hawks highlights to be seen any time soon.
Another episode of the previously mentioned “Sports & Torts” is in the books. Or wherever the fine folks at Talkzone.com put their archived material. The podcast for the Nov. 15 show that featured auction house founder Ken Goldin and IFBB Bikini Pro/personal trainer/aspiring author and more Nicole Moneer is available. You can access the highly acclaimed (certainly in the Spada and Harris households, as well as reportedly elsewhere) program by clicking here.
