Midweek musings: With a 3-0 victory in the All-Star Game on Tuesday in New York, the American League gained homefield advantage over the National League for the World Series. Well, that’s certainly good news for the Chicago White Sox. OK, not really. Not unless they can go about 60-10 the rest of the season, so they can reach the postseason and have a chance to reach the Fall Classic.
* Speaking of the Sox, left-hander Chris Sale was the winning pitcher with two perfect innings that included two strikeouts. See how his won-lost percentage improves when he received more than the 2.76 runs per game that ranks No. 92 in the big leagues.
* Speaking of All-Star pitchers, the entrance of New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera to handle the eighth inning was handled about as well as any moment in sports history. You can debate whether he really deserved the Most Valuable Player award, but why? It’s not as if there was anyone who provided a more memorable performance — warming up and then tossing a 12-pitch 1-2-3 inning..
* From MLB.com: “Major League Baseball, which already has a zero-tolerance policy toward bias of any sort, underscored that commitment to equality on Tuesday by announcing a new code of conduct that strengthens its stance against discrimination based on sexual orientation.”
* From ESPN.com: “As rumors swirl that Major League Baseball is close to dispensing punishment in the Biogenesis case, the head of the players’ association said it’s possible the players involved would not serve their penalties until the 2014 season.” Which makes one wonder whether a zero-tolerance approach might be simpler, if commissioner Bud Selig and the rest of the sport’s powers-that-be really wanted to rid baseball of performance-enhancing drugs.
* Despite the stupidity attached to awarding homefield advantage for the World Series to the winning league, baseball’s all-star game is the best of any sport. Because it is a contest that most closely resembles an actual regular-season game.
