And so we prepare to say fond farewell to 2011. Or not so fond, depending perhaps how the year went. Regardless, a new year approaches; and with it comes hope, whether you happen to see it or not.
Hope is there, but only if you want it to be. And who wouldn’t? As if there’s an upside to pessimism? Hope is what drives people to attend sporting events. Most are hoping for a specific team to win; some are hoping for a competitive contest; some are hoping to be seen and don’t pay particular attention to the athletic activities. But the element of hope exists nonetheless.
Hope is what had the Bears and some fans thinking the postseason was a possibility until they were mathematically eliminated in Week 16. Hope is what the Cubs and White Sox entered the season with and what they are trying to recapture in the offseason. Hope, after all, is what helps sell tickets. Hope is what the Blackhawks had in seeking a Stanley Cup repeat — only to be stopped in the playoffs. Hope is what the Bulls had when they went up against the Miami Heat in the playoffs before being eliminated, and hope is what the Bulls have again with three victories in their first four games of a shortened season.
Hope is a more consise way of saying “wishful thinking.” Somehow it’s difficult to envision a sign proclaiming “Keep Wishful Thinking Alive” and thinking that might be a campaign slogan. So we will continue use a monosyllablic noun to try to help us avoid the dreaded frown.
Now generally in spaces like this you find things like year-end reviews, “the top [fill in the number] [fill in the noun] of [fill in the year].”
Here’s hoping you can live without one of those. For those of you who have enjoyed any of what has been part of the site during 2011, thank you. We will strive to make it even better in 2012.
Thank you to all who have been so helpful — whether intentionally or not — in making this site what it is. What is is — hopefully — is entertaining and even occasionally informative.
No need to hope for more photos and videos of attractive females. We will continue to feature photos and videos of such subjects. Which explains the photos and videos that accompany today’s — and every day’s — edition. Expect to see more of April Rose, a favorite around here as everyone knows. And multi-talented Lariyah Daniels. And many familiar — as well as new — faces and other assorted body parts.
It’s a litle unclear what we will do when the NFL regular season has ended and Jaime Edmondson isn’t posting her pigksin picks and pics. But we will figure something out. At least that’s the hope.
Speaking of which …
Here’s hoping 2012 is better than 2011 — even if this year has been fantastic. For those who found 2011 far from fantastic, here is to better times, high hopes and greater realities.
OK, somebody better cue some video before this starts getting depressing:
