Augusta: Something to Get Teed Off About

August 21, 2012 @ No Comments

Random thoughts (or what passes for thinking around here) while wondering how long it will be before Augusta National will be able to pat itself on the back for having a foursome of female members:

She threw out the first pitch at the Sox game -- but not in this outfit.

* Augusta National, host of the venerable Masters golf tournament, has invited two women to join. The first females since the club was founded in 1932 are former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and South Carolina financier Darla Moore. Welcome to the 20th century (19th or earlier elsewhere in society). At this rate, a female foursome of members should be ready to tee off by 2092. Maybe sooner.

* How long before White Sox general manager Ken Williams starts complaining about all the money the team spends on fireworks after home runs and the crowds will have to be larger to support the pyrotechnics? OK, probably never.

* If you’re a Sox fan, are you happy the team had four home runs in its 9-6 victory Monday (Aug. 20) over the New York Yankees at U.S. Cellular Field or are you concerned starter Gavin Floyd failed to last three innings? Well, it could be both.

This was Tricia's outfit for Monday's pitch.

* Speaking of home runs, Chicago Cubs third baseman Josh Vitters hit his first in a 9-5 loss to the Brewers in Milwaukee. Before Cubs fans become too excited, Vitters was 1-for-4 for the game — raising his batting average from .094 to 108.

* Speaking of batting averages, no player on the Cubs with at least 200 at-bats is hitting better than shortstop Starlin Castro — and he’s batting .277. First baseman Anthony Rizzo is hitting .294 in 187 at-bats.

* Chicago Bears defensive end Julius Peppers has donated $250,000 to the University of North Carolina. The benevolent gesture comes days after reports surfaced about alleged irregularities during his studies at the school. Just a guess that Peppers didn’t tackle his studies with quite the enthusiasm he did for opposing players. But his generosity is to be admired.

Speaking of the Bears, players who lead with their helmets to make a tackle (such as rookie safety Brandon Hardin) ought to have their heads examined. Oh, they generally do after — like Hardin — they are carted off the field.

Tennis star Maria Sharapova has a sweet new business.

While some athletes are promoting healthy eating, tennis ace Maria Sharapova has launched a line of candy called “Sugarpova.”

A portion of the proceeds from sales of her products will go to her philanthropic foundation. No word whether some might go to the dentist to handle cavities.

Appearing on “CBS This Morning” on Monday, Sharapova said, “I feel like everyone needs a treat, and everyone loves candy around the world.”

She also said she “wanted to start something that was my own.”

“I love candy, I love gummies and when the name Sugarpova came about, I thought this was something I really wanted to own.”

The video research staff at elliottharris.com worked long and hard (OK, maybe not so long and not so hard) to find something suitable for today’s effort. So here is some action footage from the recent Exxxotica Chicago 2012 in Rosemont:
