Baez Callup Should Be a Hit for Cubs

Random thoughts (OK, not even that much because that process seems to be momentarily incapacitated — more than usual around here — because of celebratory-induced fatigue):

* Speaking of celebration, the Chicago Cubs have called up infielder Javier Baez, one of their stars of the future. He is to join the team in Denver for its series against the Rockies that begins Tuesday. Well, if you want to give a youngster (Baez is 21) a ballpark to hit in, Coors Field has to be about the best. Even better than the Cubs’ Wrigley Field when the wind is blowing out. And it doesn’t hurt that Colorado is not exactly a formidable foe.

* Also celebrating are the White Sox, who defeated the Texas Rangers on Monday 5-3 at U.S. Cellular Field — thanks to three runs batted in by catcher Tyler Flowers (3-for-3 with a home run) and two by first baseman Jose Abreu (2-for-3) and the weather. The game was called after 6 1/2 innings because of a downpour that left the field unplayable.

* Speaking of Abreu, the slugger was named American League player of the month and rookie of the month. Spx fans already are bracing for the moment when some other player is named rookie of the year. Something says there just might not be any need for any such anguish — premature or otherwise.

* Yes, today’s effort is shorter than usual (blame it on jet lag). And, as usual, complaints will be minimal because for some inexplicable reason, there are those out there in cyberspace who believe this site functions much better when the words are at a minimum.
