Bartman Review: Nothing New

September 28, 2011 @ No Comments

The Chicago Cubs were five outs from their first World Series appearance since 1945 in their quest for their first World Series title since 1908. It was Game 6 of the National League Championship Series. Cubs vs. the Florida Marlins on a cool evening in 2003.

Playboy Playmate Pilar Lastra is a multi-sport threat.

I can remember being in the auxiliary press box (normally the dining area) at Wrigley Field and reconciling to the remarkable reality that the Cubs were going to attain something so elusive that it had gained a life beyond futility. The ”Lovable Losers” were going to be National League champions. OK. That’s a lot to comprehend for someone who never had seen the Cubs in the World Series other than in photos and film.

Then a foul ball went into the stands, a fellow tried to catch it, and Cubs left fielder Moises Alou reacted as if he actually would have caught the ball if not for the fan.

And so was born the legend of Steve Bartman, who subsequently served as a scapegoat for some frustrated fans (as if being a Cubs fan doesn’t have sufficient frustration in the best of time?) as the Marlins rallied to win that night. And the next.

ESPN televised a program Tuesday night “Catching Hell” that deals with scapegoats. If you missed seeing the program that is part of the acclaimed ”30 for 30” documentary series, it will be rebroadcast Sept. 29, 30; Oct. 1, 2, 8; Nov. 12, 13 (check listings for time and which ESPN channel).

Among those commenting on the show on Twitter was Pilar Lastra , the Playboy Playmate (August 2004) who co-hosts a fantasy football program on Playboy Radio on Sirius XM.

This from RealPilarLastra: Just watched Catching Hell on @espn how Cub fans blamed Steve Bartmen 4 interfering with a crucial play! Wow how can people be so mean? :(

In all fairness, merely dumb fans were mean.

Among other tweets of varying levels of amusement:

* d2thematthews: I can’t wait for the ESPN doc about Roberto Baggio’s missed PK at the ’94 World Cup featuring exclusive interviews with Garo Yepremian.

* BenMann10: “Catching Hell” is the most depressing documentary I’ve ever seen.

* PWSullivan: After Bartman success, next ESPN documentary on Crane [Kenney, Cubs president] getting Greek priest to bless the Cubs dugout with holy water before ’08 NLDS.

* DanWetzel: I’d like to see a doc that chases down Tribune Company officials and ridicules them for years of Cubs failures

* wpbc: according to reports bartman doesn’t have a facebook or twitter account. meaning he may actually work when he’s at work.

* NOTSportsCenter: Amazing how then #Cubs OF Moises Alou’s catch would’ve apparently been worth 112 outs & 5 wins

* espn: “You know what the funny thing is? I wouldn’t have caught it, anyway.” – Moises Alou

* BrianBernardoni: I really wanted #CatchingHell to bring some closure to the whole #Bartman debacle. Only winning will end the torture.

OK, a little Pilar Lastra video:

From the better-late-than-never department, here is Jaime Edmondson’s pick for Monday night football (made well in advance of the actual game; and, yes, that’s a Cowboys-themed outfit):
