Bears-Lions Focus? Detroit Pride (as in Cheerleaders)

December 30, 2012 @ No Comments

Pride factors into the Chicago Bears-Detroit Lions game Sunday (Dec. 30). It has to do with more than the Bears needing a victory at Ford Field — plus a Minnesota Vikings loss to Green Bay — to reach the postseason. It has to do with the Detroit Pride. As in the unofficial cheerleaders of the football team.

The Detroit Pride Cheerleaders had their debut in the 2010 Lions home opener. The team has grown from 14 in 2010 to 20 in 2011 to 28 this season. Not that there is necessarily more to cheer about for Lions fans. The cheerleaders do not perform on the field, but they do enhance the game-day experience. And other days, too. The cheerleaders (ages 18-30) make appearances at various events, as they try to get across their message of being “positive role models for youth across the state … all with the mission of ‘Bring the SPIRIT and PRIDE back to Detroit.'”

At least that’s what the cheelreaders’ web page says.

And a reminder (not that one really is needed) that the Bears no longer have cheerleaders. They once did in the Honey Bears. But those cheerleaders last roamed the Soldier Field sidelines in 1985, the only season that produced a Bears Super Bowl crown. Coincidence?
