Bears, Playboy Playmates Can Think of 2012

December 19, 2011 @ No Comments

If you look closely, there were some positives in the Chicago Bears’ 38-14 loss Sunday loss to the Seattle Seahawks at Soldier Field. OK, maybe if you squinted. Or better yet with eyes closed.

Say hello to Anna Sophia Berglund. Keeping abreast of all things Playboy is an important part of this site's function.

For one thing, the Green Bay Packers — who suffered their first loss of the season Sunday — nonetheless should be overconfident for their Christmas night matchup against the Bears at Lambeau Field. The Bears (7-7) should have the Pack (13-1) right where they want them — with the possible exception of the game’s location.

Also:

* Quarterback Jay Cutler doesn’t have to worry about trying to come back from a fractured thumb to play a game or two as the Bears prepare for the postseason. Yes, the Bears have mathematical chances for the playoffs. You can check back in about a week to see if the same can be said (and the uneducated guess here is they will not).

* Injured running back Matt Forte similarly doesn’t have to worry about coming back from a sprained MCL in his right knee for the last two games of the season and instead can focus on recuperating. That and how much money he can garner in a contract with the team.

* Caleb Hanie can call the moving company in that the backup quarterback won’t be back. Nothing against Hanie, but he has shown very little — close to nothing actually is more accurate, especially regarding his accuracy — that would make anyone want to bring the free-agent-to-be back.

* Receiver Johnny Knox can think about next season. He is to have surgery Monday to stabilize a vetebra after he was hit after he fumbled away a reception in the first quarter. The Bears said Knox has a “positive prognosis for his career and quality of life.” As if he could have a positive prognosis for his career and not his quality of life?

* Mike Martz can start fielding offers to take his offensive genius elsewhere. Whther that means as an offensive coordinator, which he is with the Bears, or something grander is for his ego to ponder.

* Free-agent-to-be Kyle Orton can contemplate returning to Chicago as a backup to Cutler — for whom he was traded to Denver before the Broncos released him in time for Orton to quarterback the Kansas City Chiefs past Green Bay Sunday. Assuming Cutler can live with having somebody who can play in the NFL as his backup.

* Bears general manager Jery Angelo can make a move to improve the front office — by departing. Granted a team that loses its starting quarterback and running back will suffer, but the dropoff has been about as great as that from the 95th floor of the Hancock Building. And the Bears’ landing hasn’t been any softer.

Told you there was a bright side. Didn’t say it was for this season.

So how can we brighten up an otherwise drab Monday for Bears fans?

Well, we can contemplate 2012. Not so much the football season as Playboy Playmate of the Year.

Voting for PMOY — as the Playboy folks like to call it — has begun. As a public service (yes, and in the never-ending quest for the Pulitzer Prize for Pubic Public Service — or the cyberspace equivalent — your humble correspondent will try to provide comprehensive coverage as well as some uncoverage regarding PMOY action.

You can vote at playboy.com. We will take the candidates in chronological order. First up is 2011’s Miss January, Anna Sophia Berglund. She has the Twitter endorsement of JoJo McCarthy. In that JoJo was a guest on “Sports & Torts” recently with yours truly and co-host David Spada at talkzone.com, we will give Anna Sophia serious consideration. As if that’s not enough, she also happens to be one of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner’s girlfriends.
