The Chicago Blackhawks overcame a 3-1 series deficit to eliminate the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 in overtime of Game 7 Wednesday (May 29) at the United Center. The Hawks move on the the Western Conference finals against the Los Angeles Kings beginning Saturday and Sunday at the UC (where the Rolling Stones are playing Friday and Monday). Maybe to make things interesting, the Hawks will fall behind 3-0 in the best-of-seven series. Or have Keith Richards in goal for Game 1 and Mick Jagger for Game 2.
* Given the depth of emotion that Hawks fans displayed toward the Wings, it wouldn’t be surprising to hear a chant during Game 1 against the Kings of “Detroit sucks!” Of course, the reality is with its beloved Wings ousted, Detroit sulks.
* Speaking of Hawks fans, do they really need to see their team finish off the Wings to feel superior to Detroit? Apparently, some do. If that’s what helps your self-esteem, you might want to reassess your life. Just a thought — for any fans of any team.
* The NHL’s final four — Hawks (2010), Kings (2012), Boston Bruins (2011) and Pittsburgh Penguins (2009) — are the last four teams to win the Stanley Cup. Parity apparently not being as important in hockey as other pro leagues would like you to think there is in theirs.
* Well, the pundits who said the team that scores first would win the Hawks-Wings game. Of course, the aforementioned pundits did not tell you the other team would tie the game, and the contest would go into overtime.
* There’s nothing quite like the late-night (early-morning) replay of Comcast SportsNet’s “SportsTalk Live” previewing a game that is over by the time the rerun airs. Not sure there’s a simple solution to any of that. But the program’s timeliness does suffer. Of course, not as much as Wings fans watching the replay who think their team still has a chance in Game 8 of the best-of-seven series.
* For those who think the topic today is hockey simply so we can run Don Bersano’s photo of Elena Carvell in Hawks attire, the editorial staff at elliottharris.com would like to assure you that it is merely coincidence. The real reason to have hockey as the focus is so we can include the video of the Hawks’ goal song “Chelsea Dagger” (which has nothing to do with hockey but is entertaining viewing). Cue the video:
If it’s Thursday (and the odds would seem fairly good that they are — in no small part because yesterday was Wednesday, provided that today is May 30 or a subsequent Thursday), then it is time for another edition of “Sports & Torts” with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris at noon Central time on Talkzone.com.
The May 30 guest is Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive end Gino Marchetti, who starred for the Baltimore Colts in the 1950s and ’60s. He makes 60 minutes go by quickly as he recalls his college days at the University of San Francisco when he was a teammate of Ollie Matson, Bob St. Clair and a couple of other future pro football players.
And for those keeping score, the talent procurement people at “Sports & Torts” have not yet sealed the deal for an interview with Playboy Playmate Raquel Pomplun. That effort is ongoing. And if it’s consolation to anyone (and the guess here is that it actually might be), June 2013 Playmate Audrey Aleen Allen was gracious enough to spend some time with your humble correspondent — via telephone — to take an interview that will be part of the “Sports & Torts” experience in the not-too-distant future.
For those unable to catch the May 30 show when it airs live (and/or for those who want an encore performance), the program will be available later in the day on podcast at Talkzone.com.
And here is where we go for our daily dose of non-gratuitous video, thanks to the never-ending efforts of the editorial and video departments of elliottharris.com (and their broad definition of “gratuitous”):
