Blackhawks Streaking Way to Stanley Cup Title?

February 23, 2013 @ No Comments

Saturday smorgasbord: The Chicago Blackhawks defeated the visiting San Jose Sharks 2-1 on Friday (Feb. 22) to give them at least one point in their first 17 games. That total set the NHL record for longest streak with at least one point. The Anaheim Ducks (2006-07) with 16, the 1984-85 Edmonton Oilers with 15 and the 1943-44 Montreal Canadiens with 14 are next on the list. All three teams went on to win the Stanley Cup. The chances of the Hawks winning the Stanley Cup would appear to be good — especially if they don’t lose a postseason game.

* Speaking of the postseason (NBA rather than NHL), the Chicago Bulls could make a deep run this year — if they could figure a way to have teams like the Charlotte Bobcats in it. In their 105-75 victory Friday on the road, the Bulls had eight players scoring in double figures — led by Taj Gibson with 17. As opposed to the team scoring 67 points total in Thursday’s loss to defending NBA champion Miami. The Bulls play Sunday at Oklahoma City, which is a legitimate title contender. As opposed to the Bulls, whose chances for an NBA crown would appear to be down.

* The Chicago Bandits have re-signed pitcher Monica Abbott for the 2013 season. Last season she had a National Pro Fastpitch league-best 14 victories and was named pitcher of the year for the second season in a row. Nobody asked, but the Bandits ought to find a catcher named Costello, so they could have Abbott and Costello provide a rendition of the comedy classic “Who’s on First?”

* “Chicago Tribune Live” — which was about as lively as the newspaper (you can interpret that any way you want) — is no more on Comcast SportsNet. Beginning Feb. 25, “SportsTalk Live” will be the next generation of a David Kaplan-hosted show that will feature discussion of local and national topics. The hour-long program, which is to air Monday-Friday at 5:30 p.m. (5 p.m. when there are live pro event schedule conflicts) also will feature viewer interaction. Wonder if the abbreviated name for the show will be “STL.” Which, of course, is the abbreviated version of “St. Louis.”

* Congratulations to Playboy Playmate Jaime Edmondson and Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Evan Longoria on the birth of their daughter Elle Leona Longoria.
