Jake Peavy is the scheduled starter for the Boston Red Sox in Game 3 of the World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday at Busch Stadium. Yes, the same right-hander who started the season with the Chicago White Sox and eventually was traded in a three-team deal that included the Detroit Tigers. So Peavy on the mound would seem about as close to the Fall Classic as the White Sox will get any time soon.
* Speaking of Peavy, as White Sox fans can verify, he is capable of outstanding pitching performances. And other efforts where he looks more like he is merely out standing on the pitcher’s mound and talking to himself. Well, presumably himself. Peavy might not lead the Sox — Red or White — in many categories, but one of them with both teams certainly has to be most words muttered into his glove on the field.
* Speaking of the World Series, Game 2 St. Louis starter Michael Wacha (six innings of three-hit ball) — the winner in a 4-2 decision — is 22. Carlos Martinez, who pitched two scoreless innings, is 22. Closer Trevor Rosenthal, who struck out the side in the ninth inning at Fenway Park, is 23. So please tell me more about how the Chicago Cubs are going to be competitive in the National League Central in the next few years because the Cubs have prospects developing in the minor leagues.
* Speaking of the Cardinals and young arms, Game 3 scheduled starter Joe Kelly is 25. And rookie Shelby Miller, who went 15-9 with a 3.06 earned-run average in 2013, turned 23 this month. Rookie reliever Seth Maness turned 25 last week. Rookie reliever Kevin Siegrist is 24. So please tell me about the Cubs’ youth movement and the grand plan that president of baseball operations Theo Epstein and enderal manager Jed Hoyer have.
* The Legends Football League (formerly Lingerie Football League) Chicago Bliss is holding tryouts on Saturday for the 2014 team. Tryouts will be at the Bridgeview Sports Dome from 8:30-noon Central time. You can find out information by clicking here. Yes, this is what your humble correspondent considers a public-service announcement.
For those who missed the Oct. 24, 2013, edition of “Sports & Torts” on Talkzone.com, what can I say? You missed co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris on their weekly interview show. OK, so maybe you can live with that. But to miss lovely Lariyah Daniels? Tsk. Tsk.
Once again, Lariyah was a delight to have on the show with topics ranging from art (she recently has started Blood Stained Canvas to showcase her talent in that form) to bikini competition (where she showcases her form in that talent) to music (where she is the lead singer in the group Hessler) to much more.
Also appearing on the program was Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Jack Ham, the former Pittsburgh Steelers standout.
