When the word came down that the Chicago Cubs wanted “culture change,” some of us thought that meant something to do with yogurt. It turns out that’s not the case, although if you want to sell some company to be the “official yogurt of the Cubs,” that’s always a possibility.
As far as changing the Cubdom culture, it appears owner Tom Ricketts is not entirely committed to such a mindset. Namely, he told Comcast SportsNet Chicago he is working on re-signing team president of business operations Crane Kenney whose career highlights include having a Greek priest sprinkle holy water on the Cubs dugout.
On the bright side (for those who do not find Ricketts’ words comforting), there is the report that the Cubs are interested in Albert Pujols and had contacted the agent for the St. Louis Cardinals free-agent first baseman. The Cubs also have interest for Prince Fielder, the Milwaukee Brewers’ free-agent first baseman who is familiar with new Cubs manager Dale Sveum (he was a Milwaukee coach).
Whether any of that interest translates to the Cubs having an all-star caliber, power-hitting first baseman is yet to be seen or signed.
Maybe new Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein merely is trying to drive up the asking price on Pujols, whom the Cardinals hope to re-sign.
And maybe the Cubs actually would rather have the younger Fielder, who presumably would be less expensive.
Or maybe the Cubs want someone else as they transition to whatever it is that they are transitioning to.
This much is clear: not much. Other than Greg Maddux is leaving the organization to join the Texas Rangers, where his brother Mike is pitching coach. Greg will work with pitchers and be in uniform during spring training.
As for the Cubs adding Pujols or Fielder? This is time for the hot stove league. Which also can be considered the hot-air league in that talk does not always become reality. Of course, Cubs fans are accustomed to living in something of a fantasy world. So maybe somehow all this makes sense.
Speaking of fantasy worlds …
Another day, another Victoria’s Secret video. Or videos, if the visual research department at elliottharris.com has recovered from Tuesday’s VS Fashion Show on CBS and is able to track down some video from the festivities. Hey, what do you know. Mission accomplished:
