The Chicago Soul FC home debut featured just about anything a fan could want: free parking, $1 hot dogs, $1 beer, T-shirts tossed to fans in the stands, a dance team comprised of attractive young women, longtime radio voice Les Grobstein working the public-address system and an enthusiastic audience.
The contest Friday (Dec. 7) at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates even featured a late lead for the Soul against the Rochester Lancers. What looked like a near-certain victory turned into definite defeat when Rochester’s Mauricio Salles scored a three-point goal with 11 seconds left for a 13-11 Lancers victory.
“We have to learn how to put the game away,” Soul coach Manny Rojas said. “We had the score in our favor near the end, and we failed to maintain and capitalize. We missed a lot of opportunities on our end. I think it came down to a matter of confidence. We lost it, and now we have to find a way to get it back if we want to turn things around.”
Let the record show Carlos Munoz of the Soul scored the game’s first goal. The Soul (2-6) plays Sunday at the Missouri Comets in Kansas City. Its next home game will be Dec. 14 against the defending Major Indoor Soccer League champion Milwaukee Wave.
If it’s any consolation, your humble correspondent did attend the game with a video-recording device and is happy to share them with you. If it’s further consolation, most of the videos feature the Soulmates — the Soul’s dance team
