Cubs’ Fortunes as Different as Night and Day

May 20, 2013 @ No Comments

Monday meanderings: With a 4-3 loss to the New York Mets on Sunday (May 19) at Wrigley Field, the Chicago Cubs fell to 7-15 in day games this season. They are 11-10 in night games. This is irrefutable evidence that the Cubs need to play fewer day games. Well, either that or have better ballplayers.

April Rose always is welcome around here — regardless of attire.

* If it’s any consolation to Cubs fans (and the guess here is that it is not), the Cubs have lost 10 one-run games. Their 6-10 mark in one-run contests is tied for the worst in the major leagues with the Miami Marlins. If it’s any consolation (and again the guess here is that it is not), the Marlins are 20 games below .500 to the Cubs’ mere eight.

* White Sox infielder Jeff Keppinger drew a walk Sunday in a 6-2 loss to the host Los Angeles Angels. It was his second of the season — in 147 at-bats. Sox designated hitter Adam Dunn drew a walk Sunday. It was his 16th of the season — in 142 at-bats. Dunn also struck out three times Sunday and has a team-leading 54 for the season. Dunn’s strikeout total is good (bad?) for fourth in the American League.

* Speaking of strikeouts, Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo struck out Sunday in his first at-bat. It was his first in 39 at-bats. To show it was no fluke, he struck out two more times and has a team-leading 37 in a 167 at-bats for the season.

These lovely Luvabulls are part of an NBA program in Brazil.

* In an era of free-swinging batters, Cubs second baseman Darwin Barney has 12 walks to 11 strikeouts this season. Those numbers might be more impressive if they were accompanied by something more than a .192 batting average.

* Speaking of walks, White Sox right-hander Jake Peavy issued five Sunday in six innings. Included were two passes that forced in runs. He had yielded only eight walks in 45 2/3 innings entering the contest and did not walk a batter until the third inning Sunday.

* A few members of the Luvabulls left last week for Brazil to be part of an NBA event designed to increase the league’s global presence. If somehow there had been a Game 6 against the Miami Heat, those Luvabulls would have missed the contest at the United Center. So, of course, consporacy theorists may feel free to wonder whether the league knew there wasn’t going to be a Game 6. As if conspiracy theorists need anyone’s permission to come up with things.

* As long as the Bulls were sending representatives to Brazil, they could have included star guard Derrick Rose. Rumor (totally unfounded, of course) that he was cleared in late February to take Portuguese lessons.

There always is room around here for one of our favorites, the always delightful April Rose. The former Loop Rock Girl and Maxim Hometown Hottie came in at No. 89 on this year’s Maxim Hot 100 list. Obviously, no one around here was responsible for April being ranked so far down. No 1 on the Hot 100 is Miley Cyrus. Here’s is video of both:
