Cubs’ Managerial Search Process Continues

November 6, 2013 @ No Comments

Midweek musings: The Seattle Mariners named Lloyd McClendon their manager on Tuesday. The same fellow who once was a Cubs player. Meaning the scoreboard shows ex-Cubs leading the actual Cubs in filling a managerial vacancy.

Playboy Playmate Gemma Lee Farrell is to appear on the Nov. 7 “Sports & Torts” show. Not necessarily in this outfit.

* Reported among the finalists for the Mariners job was Rick Renteria, who also was among the possibilities with the Detroit Tigers before they named Brad Ausmus to replace Jim Leyland. Renteria is thought to be high on the Cubs list. Well, that’s giving the Cubs the benefit of the doubt and believing they actually have a list. So if Renteria becomes the successor to departed Dale Sveum, it will be unclear whether the Cubs were his first choice or he was the Cubs first choice. Or neither. Just guessing here, but I’m betting on neither.

* If the Cubs selection is San Diego Padres coach Renteria, then the question — well, other than: “Why?” — will be: “What took so long?”

* The idea in naming a manager is to get the best one, not necessarily the first one. That said, if a team has some idea who it wants, then selecting a manager is like selecting a pastry in a bakery: Pick one as soon as possible; otherwise you run the risk of ending up with something that is picked over and of lesser quality.

* If the Boston Red Sox are blocking coach Torey Lovullo from interviewing for the Cubs job, then it is unclear which team is dumber: the Red Sox for their behavior in limiting the possible upward mobility of a coach under contract or the Cubs for not finding out sooner.

* Something says the Cubs will have to do quite a selling job to excite their fan base about their new manager — regardless of who it turns out to be.

For those who are politically aware, Tuesday was election day in the United States. It also was election day for the politically unaware. There were results that pleased some folks and displeased others. Oh, the joys of American democracy.

So?

Well, we were trying to find a creative way to talk about another election. This one has to do with “Sports & Torts,” the interview show co-hosted by David Spada and Elliott Harris on Thursdays at noon Central time on Talkzone.com. The highly acclaimed program (well, it is held in such regard in the Spada and Harris households — as well as reportedly elsewhere) is in the running for best sports podcast. It is in the final 10 at Podcastawards.com.

The polls remain open remain open for voting for your favorite sports podcast. OK, my favorite sports podcast. And David’s, too. Once again, we are asking for your support. All you have to do is go to podcastawards.com and vote. After you vote you will receive an email confirming your vote. Your vote will not count unless you respond to the email. If you don’t see the voting verification email, check out your spam or junk email folder (that’s where mine continue to go — trying to send me a subliminal message?).

And thank you in advance for your vote or votes. As with any election involving anything Chicago-related, you are encouraged to vote early and often. The main difference between this and an actual Chicago election is multiple votes from a person (presumably still living) is permitted for the Podcast Awards. You are allowed to vote once a day. To vote, click here. Among our competition are sites from ESPN and CBS, so we need to battle the behemoths. We feel good about doing so — especially with your assistance. Stay tuned. Voting continues through Nov. 15. And thank you once again.

And as long as we are speaking of “Sports & Torts,” we might as well mention the guests on the Nov. 7 edition will be Pro Football Hall of Famer Willie Davis from the Green Bay Packers during Vince Lombardi’s days as coach and Playboy’s Playmate for November Gemma Lee Farrell.

Gee, as fate — and a moderate amount of research — would have it, we happen to have some video of Gemma Lee Farrell (sorry, no Willie Davis; mainly because the video research department stopped looking for things after coming across her video):

Here is where to go for a daily dose of non-gratuitous video (thanks to the excellent efforts of the editorial and video departments at elliottharris.com — and today we even had a feel-good story that does not involve females in skimpy attire; and, yes, we still have the fetching females, too):
