With baseball’s trade deadline looming (or whatever trade deadlines do, which probably is very little, because when was the last time you saw a trade deadline out in public doing anything?), the possibility of a player or players being dealt can be a distraction. Which explains, of course, why the Chicago White Sox were swept at home by the Kansas City Royals over the weekend. And which explains, of course, why the Chicago Cubs swept the defending World Series champion Giants in San Francisco.
* Speaking of ballplayers being traded, Alfonso Soriano, dealt by the Cubs to the New York Yankees last week, went 4-for-5 Sunday with a home run and game-winning single in the ninth inning. His first homer with the Yankees this season went to right field. Which is as many of his 17 home runs with the Cubs that went to right field. Chicago.Which might be an indication he’s happy he left.
* Still speaking of ballplayers being traded, Sox right-hander Jake Peavy seems resigned to the reality that he will be dealt. Well, maybe not resigned. Maybe looking forward to it. Unless, of course, he’d rather be pitching for a last-place team than a contender. His contract is good regardless of where he is employed.

And the good (?) news is the Sox start a series Monday at Cleveland. The bad news is the Sox’ road record (18-34) is nothing to write home about. And also among the worst in the big leagues.
* Speaking of home runs (well, we were a couple of paragraphs ago), Cubs left-hander Travis Wood hit his third of the season in a 2-1 victory. He had three total in his first three seasons. The Cubs won on a homer by catcher Welington Castillo. It was his third of the season. Castillo also committed his ninth error of the season, which — as far as the statistical sleuths at elliottharris.com can figure — is the most in the major leagues this season. Well, if you were looking for a Cubs player to be a league leader …
Here is where we go for a daily dose of non-gratuitous video (thanks to the enterprising efforts of the editorial and video departments at elliottharris.com and their belief that very little — if anything — should be classified as “gratuitous”). For the second day in a row, Ramona Valerie Alb is among those featured in the video.
