Danks for the Memories in White Sox Win

August 26, 2013 @ No Comments

Monday meanderings: Chicago Cubs 55-74, last place in the National League Central 21 games behind the division leader. Chicago White Sox 54-75, last place in the American League Central, 22.5 games behind the division leader. Sox 8-2 last 10 games; Cubs 3-7 last 10. And so the stage is set to see which team will finish with the better record (or which team will have the better draft pick, depending on your level of masochism).

The Chicago Bliss handed the Seattle Mist and quarterback Angela Rypien their first defeat of the LFL season.

* Speaking of the Sox, Jordan Danks hit a home run in support of brother John Danks’ pitching performance in the team’s 5-2 victory against the visiting Texas Rangers. Elias Sports Bureau said it was the first time a player has supported his brother with a homer since the Kansas City Athletics’ Billy Shantz did so for Bobby Shantz on June 3, 1955. Who knew this season’s Sox could be so historic?

* Speaking of historic (OK, more like hysterics), Sox coach Mark Parent was ejected from Sunday’s game during the pregame exchange of lineup cards at home plate. Sox manager Robin Ventura said the disagreement involved something from Saturday’s game. As opposed to involving enough sense to move on from something from Saturday’s game. Well, that’s one way to have a short work day.

* Speaking of short work days, the Cubs certainly didn’t have one in losing to the Padres 3-2 in 15 innings. Padres announcer Jerry Coleman called the contest “the strangest game I’ve seen in my life.” The longtime broadcaster and former New York Yankees player, it should be noted, is 88. Words don’t really do the game justice, so check out the highlights onlne somewhere. Here’s hoping the Cubs will use some of the footage in their 2013 highlights (hey, it’s not as if there’s a ton of highlights from the limited number of games they actually won).

* Speaking of Jordan Danks (well, we were a paragraph or three ago), he replaced outfielder Avisail Garcia, who crashed into the wall in right field. Garcia is expected to be OK. He was part of the three-team trade that sent Jake Peavy to Boston and brought Garcia from Detroit.

* Speaking of Peavy, he enjoyed a Sunday night prime time start against the Los Angeles Dodgers and pitched a complete game in an 8-1 victory. It was the Dodgers’ first series loss since mid-June. L.A. next faces the Cubs, who have not won consecutive games since Aug. 9-10 against the St. Louis Cardinals.

* We would be amiss if we failed to mention the Chicago Bliss. The Legends Football League (formerly Lingerie Football League) advanced to the Sept. 1 championship game in Las Vegas by defeating the Seattle Mist 31-14 for the Western Conference title on Saturday in Ontario, Calif. The Bliss will take on the Philadelphia Passion for the LFL crown (or whatever the winner receives). For those with plenty of time on their hands, here is the game video:

Speaking of video, here is where we go for a daily dose of non-gratuitous video (thanks to the endless efforts of the editorial and video departments at elliottharris.com and the fact that they don’t know the meaning of “gratuitous” — among many, other words):
