Midweek musings: Chicago Cubs second baseman Darwin Barney wins a Gold Glove award in the National League. Which is about the extent of any postseason success that Cubs fans should be anticipating any time soon.
* Winning American League Gold Gloves on Tuesday (Oct. 30) was Chicago White Sox pitcher Jake Peavy. No doubt he will find a place for that trophy. He also might want to find a spot for an even bigger prize: the two-year, $29 million contract he signed to return to the Sox without going onto the free-agent market.
* Also winning a Gold Glove was former Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle. He won three Gold Gloves with the Sox and won this season, his first with the Miami Marlins. He enjoyed an error-free season — well, other than maybe signing with a team that finished last in its division.
* Speaking of things in Florida (though not necessarily sports-related), the Walt Disney Company’s acquisition of Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion was a bit surprising. Though nowhere near as surprising as it will be to find out inside that Darth Vader outfit is none other than Mickey Mouse.
* Eddy Curry did not start for the Dallas Mavericks in their 99-91 victory over the Lakers in Los Angeles in the teams’ season opener. He did score seven point in 17 minutes. Another former Chicago Bulls player, Elton Brand, did start for the Mavs and had eight points. Brand was 3-for-10 from the field and Curry 3-for-7. Neither percentage is particularly impressive — unless perhaps compared to another former Bulls player, Lakers forward Metta World Peace. The shooter formerly known as Ron Artest was 1-for-8.
* Chicago Bears kicker Robbie Gould will join ESPN 1000’s Jeff Dickerson on Nov. 7 from 6-9 p.m. at O’Donovan’s, 2100 W. Irving Park Rd., for “Football Night in Chicago.” Chances are excellent Gould will show up for the session. After all, he is an upright guy.
As promised, here is some video from the Chicago Desire’s promotional appearance Tuesday at XSport Fitness in Downers Grove. Featured are co-owners Vito Leonard and Joe Phelan and director of player relations Nechole McSweeney. Yes, there is video featuring members of the Bikini Basketball Association team, but it will wait for another day:
Speaking of basketball, here are the Bulls. And the Luvabulls. Not mentioned in that order of importance to some of us. The videos, however, are. First up is Erika, the senior member of the dancer squqad, as the team’s opening game is Wednesday (Oct. 31):
If this is Wednesday (the chances of that being fairly good in that yesterday was Tuesday and tomorrow is Thursday — assuming you are reading this on Oct. 31 or a subsequent Wednesday), then that means the Thursday fixture of “Sports & Torts” with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris on talkzone.com at noon Chicago time is almost here.
Also scheduled to be on the highly acclaimed (in the Spada and Harris households) is former Oakland Raiders star receiver Fred Biletnikoff.
The Nov. 1 show is set to have Ciara Price, the November 2011 Playboy Playmate on the show. Sad to report, she will not be in studio. But there will be visual accompaniment during her segment, if that’s any consolation. Well, to some of us, that’s more than consolation; it’s incentive.
Here is the most recent “Maximum Exposure” with one of this site’s favorites, April Rose, with Erica Tazel:
And a little more video, just for the fun of it:
