Deal Him Out: Bears Release Hurd (update)

December 16, 2011 @ No Comments

Somebody dropped the ball regarding Sam Hurd. The Chicago Bears receiver spent Wednesday and Thursday nights in jail after being arrested Wednesday on a charge of possessing “with intent to distribute 400 grams or more” of cocaine.

Jaime Edmondson did pick Atlanta to defeat Jacksonville Thursday night.

“We are aware of Sam’s arrest and are continuing to gather details surrounding it,” the Bears said in a statement. “We are disappointed whenever these circumstances arise. We will deal with them appropriately once we have all the information.”

It’s unclear whether the Bears have all the information, but they did take action Friday by cutting him from the team.

“There’s been a wrong and we’ve acted. We have a track record of doing that,” Bears general manager Jerry Angelo said. “Unfortunately a situation arose that caught us off guard, but we are to the point where we are going to do the right thing. And the right thing is to cut Sam Hurd.”

The right thing might have been to know more about what was going on before they signed him as a free agent.

“When we do our homework on players, we have a very sound and tested methodology that we go about researching all players from college to veteran free agents, and it starts in college,” Angelo said. “We spend an inordinate amount of time on character, making sure we know the player as well as we can. But no system is foolproof.

“But for me to sit here and say we should have known something that we didn’t know. No, I can’t say that in this case. There’s no foundation for anybody to say that. There are no facts. There’s no flags that anybody could present tangibly to say that we should’ve known otherwise. I want to make that perfectly clear to the public, to our fans.”

Hurd reportedly attempted to purchase large quantities of cocaine and marijuana in July, when he still was on the Dallas Cowboys.

According to the complaint, Hurd said he wanted to buy “five to 10 kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana per week for distribution in the Chicago area.”

Well, no sense thinking small. The question remains: What was he thinking and why? At what point does someone think becoming a drug dealer is a worthwhile venture?

For the Bears and/or the NFL, the question remains: Why didn’t anyone in authority have a clue what was going on with Hurd?

As a member of the Bears, Hurd has played in 12 games, mostly on special teams contributor. He has eight receptoions f for 109 yards.

“We came to work like we normally do on a Thursday,” Bears coach Lovie Smith said. “Sam wasn’t in meetings this morning. From there of course we started searching, trying to find out why a player wouldn’t be here. So there was no tipoff, didn’t know it was coming. Again, total surprise.”

Asked if the team is shocked, linebacker Lance Briggs said: “I think everyone is. Nice guy. Sam is a nice guy. Well-liked, well-liked in the locker room. He was a guy we were just all getting to know.

“You hate to see this happen to anyone. We all make mistakes, but like I said, it’s just sad to see.”

“Sad for him,” linebacker Brian Urlacher said. “Not sure what is going on. But never want to hear something like this happen to one of your teammates.

“Good teammate. That’s what I know of him. Outside of here, I don’t know him very well, but he comes to work every day and practices hard and plays hard. That’s all I know of him. He’s a friendly guy. Always been really friendly. Says ‘hi’ in the hallway every time you walk by him and I walk past him 10 times a day in the hallway and he still says ‘hi’ every time. He’s a good guy, from what I know of him from being in the building.”
“I’m just shocked about the situation,” said Bears receiver Roy Williams, a teammate of Hurd in Dallas. “It’s a situation that I don’t want anyone to be in, especially a close friend or a teammate I’ve been playing with now four or five years now. Especially a guy from Texas, with a wife and daughter.

“It’s tough for me, just cause I’m not into drugs or anything like that. But I know it has to be tough for him, because he has his family, and that’s a choice that he made. And there’s consequences, with the choices that you make.”

Playboy calls it “Workout Wednesday.” Well, for those of us who are more than a little slow in getting to the gym, think of this as “Fitness Friday.” Hey, it’s with 2008 Playmate of the Year Jayde Nicole, so it’s doubtful anyone will be complaining.
