Dim View of CBS McQueary Interview

November 16, 2011 @ No Comments

If I were an artist, the visual accompanying today’s post would be the CBS Eye — the television network’s iconic logo. Actually, it would be a black eye. That’s what somebody gave CBS, thanks to heavy promotion of an Armen Keteyian interview with Mike McQueary on Tuesday “CBS Evening News” program.

You sure this isn't Crystal Harris in a Penn State outfit? OK. She is scheduled to be on Thursday's 'Sports & Torts' at noon Chicago time on talkzone.com.

Well, using the word “interview” quite loosely regardin the Penn State assistant football coach, who is on administrative leave in the wake of grand jury allegations against former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky for child sex abuse charges.

McQueary is described in the grand jury report as witnessing Sandusky sexually abusing a boy estimated at about 10 years old in 2002.

An interview with McQueary — which was trumpeted breathlessly on CBS Chicago radio station WSCR, among other places — would be quite a “get.” WSCR even said it would carry the interview live. For those who missed the historic session, this is what it was:

Keteyian: “Do you have any idea when you think you might be ready to talk?”

McQueary: “This process has to play out, I just don’t have anything else to say.”

Keteyian: “OK, OK. … And then just one last thing, just describe your emotions right now.”

McQueary: “All over the place, just kinda, uh .. shaken.”

Keteyian: “Crazy?”

McQueary: “Crazy.”

Keteyian: “And you said what, like a … ”

McQueary: “Snow globe.”

Keteyian: “Like a snow globe.”

McQueary: “Yes sir.”

Keteyian: “All right.”

That sound you might have heard was Walter Cronkite, Edward R. Murrow and other assorted CBS colleagues turning over in their graves.

Coming attraction: Did we say Crystal Harris is to be on Thursday's 'Sports & Torts' at noon Chicago time at talkzone.com? Oh, good.

In a Nov. 8 email to a friend that was made available to the Associated Press on Tuesday, McQueary, who is on administrative leave, wrote: “I did stop it, not physically … but made sure it was stopped when I left that locker room … I did have discussions with police and with the official at the university in charge of police …. no one can imagine my thoughts or wants to be in my shoes for those 30-45 seconds … trust me.

“Do with this what you want … but I am getting hammered for handling this the right way … or what I thought at the time was right … I had to make tough impacting quick decisions.”

As if this tale hasn’t had enough twists and turns. Gov. Tom Corbett was attorney general in Pennsylvania in 2009 when he took the case on referral from from the Centre County district attorney, Michael Madeira. Taking on Penn State — and recently dismissed coach Joe Paterno — probably would have meant political suicide for Corbett’s run for governor.

Might he have dragged his feet in an investigation?

“People that are saying that are ill-informed as to how investigations are conducted, how witnesses are developed, how backup information, corroborative information is developed, and they really don’t know what they’re talking about,” Corbett told reporters Tuesday.

No doubt there will be more to this case. Stay tuned. Just don’t stay tuned to CBS the next time it trumpets an exclusive such as the interview with McQueary.
