Thursday thoughts (or as close as it gets to what passes for thinking around the editorial offices at elliottharris.com): The NBA trade deadline is Thursday. The Miami Heat plays the Chicago Bulls on Thursday. Which is about as close to an NBA champion as the Bulls are going to be this season — unless the Bulls somehow can pull off a trade of a non-star player or players for an all-star performer. Oh, and Chicago also will need Derrick Rose to return at MVP level of performance.
* Speaking of MVP level of performance, for all those who think Miami guard LeBron James is nowhere close to Michael Jordan’s level of performance, one question: What would be your opinion of King James if he was in a Bulls uniform?
* Speaking of James, for those who want to make the case that he is nowhere close to MJ’s level, consider this (and use wisely): James’ assist-to-turnover ration is 2.34. Bulls guard Nate Robinson’s is 2.70.
* MJ’s career assist-to-turnover ratio is 1.93. Then again, he was on the court to score rather than set up people to score.
* So Derrick Rose has played 5-on-5 in practice this week. Don’t go jumping for joy. Certainly not before he can jump high enough to dunk. Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said Wednesday: “He’s made some good steady progress. He’s right where he should be. There has to be an understanding that in practice you’re trying to get to a game-like intensity and you know you’re never going to get there, so there’s a whole different level to playing in an NBA game. He’s making good, steady progress, he’s doing fine, he’s got to continue to work on his rehab.” Doesn’t sound like Thibodeau is describing a player who is ready to go 5-on-5 in a game any time soon, does it?
Hey, as long as Sports Illustrated has videos to use from its 2013 swimsuit issue, we might as well use them. today’s installment:
If it’s Thursday (which we’re fairly certain it is, because yesterday was Wednesday — well, provided that you are reading this on Feb. 21, 2013, or a subsequent Thursday), then it is time once again for “Sports & Torts” at noon Chicago time on talkzone.com with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris.
The guests on the Feb. 21 are Pro Football Hall of Famer John Randle and a pair of lovely ladies who will be participating in the Arnold Sports Festival to be held Feb. 28-March 3 in Columbus, Ohio. Christina Clausen will be competing in the figure open class, and Caryn Paolini will be competing in the Bikini A event. Both women are members of Team F.A.B. headed by Staci Boyer and Sandy Wiedmeyer.
Caryn also will be participating in the Rock Star Bikini Contest on Feb. 28 at The Vault, 35 E. Gay St., in Columbus. Information about that event is available at rockstarbikini.com.
Because both women are busy preparing for The Arnold, they were unable to visit the Talkzone.com studios. However, “Sports & Torts” visited them at Team F.A.B. headquarters in suburban Chicago. It’s going the extra mile (actually many miles from elliottharris.com headquarters) that gives us hope that someday this site will win the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service — or at least the cyberspace equivalent.
Anyway, the show will be available later in the day on podcast at talkzone.com.
And this should be where we go for non-gratuitous video. Indeed it is:
