Edwin Jackson Victory Rare Treat for Cubs Fans

August 4, 2014 @ No Comments

Monday meanderings: On the bright side for the Chicago Cubs, they took their weekend series against the Dodgers in Los Angeles with.a 7-3 victory Sunday. So if the Cubs can take two of three from the National League West-leading Dodgers, what does that mean for them? They still will finish last in the NL Central.

* Still on the bright side for the Cubs was the performance of starter Edwin Jackson. He allowed two runs and seven hits in six innings. Jackson struck out six and walked none in improving his record to 6-11. He entered the game having gone 0-4 with a 7.39 Earned-run average in his seven previous starts since his last victory (vs. Pittsburgh 6-3 on June 20 at Wrigley Field). Meaning Jackson might be good for another victory before September.

* On the bright side for the Chicago White Sox, starter Jose Quintana allowed one unearned run against the host Minnesota Twins and departed after 115 pitches and a 3-1. On the less-than-bright side, Sox relievers tossed 129 pitches over three innings in a 16-3 Sox loss. No Sox reliever (and there were five of them) allowed fewer than two runs.

* Speaking of the Sox bullpen, Ronald Belisario threw 10 pitches (eight of which were strikes). The result was no outs, four hits and four runs. His ERA rose to 6.23. Reliable sources say that’s not good — even if other Sox relievers performing ended the day with even worse ERAs.

* Ex-Cub of the day: Scott Feldman threw a one-hitter as the Houston Astros defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 6-1.

* Best performance by a Chicago athlete on Sunday? For those of us who are fans of Elena Delle Donne of the Chicago Sky, she would be the pick based on her effort in a 76-65 victory vs. the visiting Washington Mystics. The 2013 WNBA rookie of the year — who was playing her second contest after being sidelined by Lyme disease — came off the bench to score 21 points in 16 minutes. If the trend continues, she can add sixth player honors (provided that the WNBA actually has something like that). She was 7-of-12 from the field, including 3-of-4 three-pointers. You can tell she’s a little off her game, though, because she made only 4-of-5 free throws.
