“The Making of the Luvabulls” had its debut on Comcast SportsNet Chicago on Wednesday. The Luvabulls had a viewing party and enjoyed the first of the series’ four 30-minute episodes. At least one person at the viewing party at Epic in downtown Chicago would like to think of being there as work. If you can consider enjoying an adult beverage, chatting with beautiful women, watching the TV show and chatting more with beautiful women work. OK, maybe it wasn’t really work. But it sure is justification for devoting space here in cyberspace to the lovely ladies.
Granted this information might not be of the same cosmic importance as the news that the Chicago Cubs had fired manager Mike Quade on Wednesday. Or the news that Cubs icon Ryne Sandberg is not going to be among the candidate to replace Quade because the Hall of Fame second baseman lacks big-league coaching and/or managing experience.
Cubs president Theo Epstein personally delivered the news to Quade in Florida. Or delivered it impersonally. If nothing else, Quade’s firing came in a face-to-face meeting. Epstein informed Sandberg in a phone call. As if all that isn’t enough to cause anguish among certain elements of Cubs Nation, the St. Louis Cardinals reportedly have asked the Philadelphia Phillies for permission to contact Sandberg about their vacancy created by Monday’s retirement of manager Tony La Russa.
OK, back to the viewing party and the program that cast the Luvabulls into the prime-time TV spotlight. The first show dealt in part with the history of the 25-woman dance squad. Cathy Core has been director of the Luvabulls since their inception in 1979. During the course of the opening episode Cathy — generally the drill sergeant who shapes the squad into the successful outfit that it is — is almost brought to tears.
Among the revelations: Cathy’s dream is to be on “Dancing With the Stars” and her favorite success storyis that of Kim Tyler, who tried out for and was cut, persevered and became a Luvabull and today is the Luvabulls choreographer.
All right. Time to cue some video from after the viewing party. If things go according to plan (and occasionally they do around here), there will be more later today:
