Even with 4 Homers, Cubs Powerless to Prevail

August 2, 2013 @ No Comments

Junior Lake and Anthony Rizzo each hit two home runs as the Chicago Cubs lost 6-4 Thursday to the Los Angeles Dodgers at Wrigley Field. Yes, it’s that time of the season (as if it hasn’t been for a while). The Cubs have lost four of five, realizing the worse their record the higher the draft pick they will have in the 2014 player selection portion of the team’s endless rebuilding plan. Besides the home runs, the Cubs amassed one other hit.

Three of the lovely ladies of Playboy Golf’s Pittsburgh event.

* Speaking of a youth movement, the Cubs signed outfielder Elroy Jimenez from the Dominican Republic. He is 16 years old, and has been deemed one of the top international prospects available this season. Cubs fans have to be excited — well, if the idea is to assemble a competitive 18-and-under traveling team.

* On the bright side for Cubs fans, well, they aren’t White Sox fans. The South Siders lost once again to the Cleveland Indians. The score this time in the four-game Indians sweep was 6-1. The Six are 26 games under .500 for the first time since 1980.

* On the bright (?) side for Sox fans, their team is going to have a really good draft pick slot in 2014.

* For the record, the Indians’ record vs. the Sox this season is 11-2 with six games remaing in this year’s series.

* Some of you may be curious why there is a photo of Ladies of Playboy Gold from the Pittsburgh event. Well, most of the reasoning goes something like this: Because. Because we can. A small part has to do with the fact that some of us will be within reasonably close proximity of Tiger Woods, among others, the World Golf Classic in Akron, Ohio. And Akron isn’t really all that far from Pittsburgh.

* Of course, Akron is much closer to Canton, Ohio, site of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. And this happens to be induction weekend for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. If someone can explain the logic in having two high-profile events the same weekend (rather than spread them out over two weekends), please fell free to do so.

* If things go according to plan (and they actually do on occasion around here), there just might be some coverage on this site from the Akron area. Golf perhaps (well, maybe if we can find more Playboy Golf photos). Football would seem more likely. Then again, there could be something from the National Sports Collectors Convention in Rosemont, Ill. — provided that your humble correspondent figures a way to be two places at once (and we are working on that late into the night/early morning), so don’t give up on that possibility.

For those who might care, Playboy Playmate Val Keil is a Phillies fan.

Did you enjoy Thursday’s “Sports & Torts” with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris on Talkzone.com? The Aug. 1 edition with Playboy Playmate Val Keil and Pro Football Hall of Fame receiver Paul Warfield, who played for the Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins?

Well, you no doubt did if you tuned in for the show. How could you not? For those who were unable to catch the program (and/or for those desiring an encore performance), good news. Thanks to the archivists (OK, executive producer Dave Olson) at Talkzone.com, the podcast of the show is available.

To access the show, all you have to do is click here. Now that wasn’t so difficult, was it?

Here is where we go for a daily dose of non-gratuitous video (thanks to the efforts of the editorial and video departments at elliottharris.com (and their generous definition of “gratuitous”). Today we are pleased to present some of the semifinalists for the 2014 Maxim Hometown Hotties contest (you’re welcome):
