Sunday smorgasbord: The Chicago White Sox and Cubs were rained out of spring-training games Saturday. Actually, two for the Cubs and one for the Sox. For some of us, there is a certain pleasure to be derived from seeing a Cactus League game (or games) rained out. With that pleasure lasting until it’s time to go out and shovel more snow.
* With a Cubs exhibition home game rained out in Mesa, Ariz., wonder if team chairman Tom Ricketts is kicking himself — or someone else — for the Cubs’ new stadium not having a dome.
* Speaking of the weather and domeless stadiums (this one in a city that really could have used one), it snowed during the Chicago Blackhawks-Pittsburgh Penguins game Saturday night at Soldier Field. It was a 5-1 victory for the Hawks, but a missed marketing opportunity for the franchise. The Hawks could have had the Ice Crew come onto the ice to clear the snow with snow blowers. The Toro Tootsies? The Sears Craftsman Cuties? Naming rights for one night wouldn’t have to have been prohibitively expensive.
* Most impressive performance at the Hawks game? Anthem singer Jim Cornelison, of course, as usual. Honorable mention to the fans who showed up for the outdoor game. Attendance — 62,921 — was greater than for any Bears football game last season.
* March 1 marked the 100th birthday of the late, legendary broadcaster Harry Caray. Maybe. Not that anyone doubts March 1 was his birth date. But the year might not be precisely accurate. Kind of like the way he was able to describe action on the radio to make it sound much more exciting that it actually was.
* Once upon a time (actually two years ago), your humble correspondent had the pleasure of sitting in on a photo shoot that good pal Don Bersano was conducting with Ashley Kaltwasser te day after she had won the Arnold Classic amateur bikini title. The native of Akron, Ohio, also had captured the Rock Star Bikini championship in Columbus, Ohio. This weekend Ashley won the Ms Bikini International. Congrats and well-deserved.
* The Ms Bikini International Arnold Classic 2014 Top 6: 1.Ashley Kaltwasser; 2. Yeshaira Robles; 3. Amanda Latona; 4. Nathalia Melo; 5. Stacey Alexander; 6. India Paulino.
* A reminder that the Chicago Bulls play the visiting New York Knicks on television Sunday afternoon. Look for Carmelo Anthony to shoot early and often for the Knicks. And look for the Bulls to win.
