Life is all about choices. Such as the one to go to Columbus, Ohio, for the Arnold Sports Festival and affiliated activities — including the Rock Star Bikini Contest. The sacrifices some of us make for the sake of our craft (or whatever we’re doing around here).
Journeying to Ohio meant missing the Chicago Bulls’ home game Thursday (Feb. 28) against the Philadelphia 76ers and in particular a particularly impressive performance by Bulls center Joakim Noah, who had 23 points, 21 rebounds and 11 blocked shots in a 93-82 victory.
He is the fourth player in the last 25 years with 20 or more points, 20 or more rebounds and 10 or more blocked shots in game, so it’s not like these things never happen.
And a lot more people saw him achieve those figures in person or on television.
So his triumph was vastly different from the one enjoyed in a more intimate — although similarly appreciative — environment. The 12 finalists at the Rock Star Bikini Contest arrived to a stirring ovation from the crowd that had assembled for an evening of fun.
Driving from Chicago for the event was relatively boring. Boring can be good. Excitement and highway driving tend not to be a good thing. So saving the excitement for the evening certainly made much more sense.
The one problem? The motel’s WiFi. It worked sporadically and slowly. Think back to the days of dialup startup for the internet. That’s what it was like — if there was any connection at all. For those of us dedicated to providing a daily dose/page of stuff, that was a problem. A major problem. One that I had no control over.
So after a few conversations with the hotel staff, your humble correspondent headed off into the night with the hope that the internet would be functioning by the time I returned to the suburban motel.
Upon returning to the motel after the Rock Star Bikini Contest, I still had trouble with the WiFi. As you can tell, I managed to overcome any obstacles and have provided you with today’s version. In a perfect world, there would have been additional videos from the event. I don’t know about you, but I am not part of a perfect world.
Meaning — with a little luck and a faster internet link — at some point there will be additional videos from the bikini contest.
One interesting side note from the event (and this one might be a little hard to fathom): An attractive woman who was a total stranger approached yours truly and mentioned — among other things that shall go unreported (but feel free to use your imagination) — she was staying at a nearby hotel.
Unaccustomed to being approached in such a manner, I politely explained that I had work to do. Oh, yes, and that I was married. Not that that seemed to bother this woman. Now, if I had been thinking quicker, I would have asked her about her hotel room — and whether it had a good internet connection.
And so, the woman vanished into the night.
Thankfully, eventually, there was a connection. One involving the worldwide web. And nothing else.
Another episode of “Sports & Torts” with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris is in the archives.
The highly acclaimed interview program (well, that’s how it’s described in the Spada and Harris households — and reportedly elsewhere) airs live on Thursdays at noon Chicago time on talkzone.com. It subsequently becomes available on podcast.
The Feb. 28, 2013, show featured Playboy Playmate Ashley Doris — the first Playmate from Connecticut — and Pro Football Hall of Famer Randall McDaniel.
For those who were unable to catch the show when it aired initially (and/or for those who would like to enjoy an encore), you can check out Ashley (and theoretically Randall, too) by clicking here.
