Following Form Has Its Moments for Cubs, White Sox

September 11, 2013 @ No Comments

Midweek musings: Wasn’t it just yesterday (meaning Tuesday, Sept. 10) that we were speaking of the unpredictability of baseball? So what happens. The Detroit Tigers thump the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. Predictable. The Cincinnati Reds lose at home to the Chicago Cubs and Edwin Jackson, who leads the major leagues in losses. The score of each game was 9-1. Not sure what the odds are of that. If, for some reason you had all of the aforementioned results and actually bet money (or anything else), you might want to think about quitting while you are ahead. Of course, that assumes you are ahead. Which, if you are someone who bets with some degree of frequency, you most likely are not.

* Speaking of the White Sox, third baseman Conor Gillaspie had three errors against Detroit. That’s the same number of pitches that he saw in two at-bats. In his defense — at least of his offense — he did go 2-for-2. He has 13 errors for the season. And one of his hits Tuesday was his 13th double. He has 12 home runs on the season. It generally is not a good sign when you third baseman has more errors than homers.

* Still speaking of the Sox (don’t ask me why), they committed four errors in the game. First baseman Paul Konerko had the one Gillaspie did not. On the bright (??) side regarding the Sox fielding, it does tend to keep the pitchers’ earned-run averages down. As well as keeping many fans down.

* Speaking of depressing, how must the Reds, who are battling for postseason position, feel about losing to Jackson (7-15)? Or having nine hits in seven innings and scoring all of one run? Or giving up Jackson’s first home run at the plate this season?

* It’s unclear what Reds manager Dusty Baker has against people who keep score of games, but using 24 players (that appears to be the total, but some of us lost count — even after taking off our shoes and socks to count up to 20). In case anyone wants to make a case against expanding rosters in September.

* Random thought (yes, those generally are Tuesday, but in this case we will make an exception because it involves an exception individual) There is nothing quite like doing some late-night driving and hearing the unique voice of Dick Biondi playing some rock ‘n’ roll oldies (that some of us remember when they were newbies) on WLS-FM (94.7). Long may he spin — or however music is played over the airwaves these days.

If this is Wednesday (and we seem to have established that — provided you are reading this on Sept. 11, 2013, or a subsequent Wednesday), then another edition of “Sports & Torts” on Talkzone.com is ever so close. Co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris have an outstanding show planned for noon on Sept. 12 with Chicago Sky coach Pokey Chatman and Pro Football Hall of Famer Mel Renfro, who starred at defensive back for the Dallas Cowboys, as the guests. The highly acclaimed show (in the Spada and Harris households, as well as reportedly elsewhere) airs at noon Central time. It also will become available on pondcast later in the day Thursday.

Speaking of Pokey Chatman, her team plays the Phoenix Mercury on Wednesday night at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill. The Chicago Luvabulls are scheduled to perform at the game. If things go as planned (and occasionally they actuall do around here), we will have video of the Luvabulls — as well as postgame interviews — for Thursday’s efforts here.

Speaking of videos, here is where to go for a daily dose of non-gratuitous video (thanks to the efforts of the editorial and video departments at elliottharris.com and the generous definition of “gratuitous” — plus the fine folks at YouTube even are recommending video):
