Hard to Figure Out Outcomes — Baseball & Otherwise

September 10, 2013 @ No Comments

Random thoughts while wondering why some people think it’s a good idea to bet on baseball. Latest case in point being Chicago Cubs left-hander Travis Wood going up against the Cincinnati Reds, who traded him to the Cubs after the 2011 season. He entered Monday’s game at Cincinnati with an 0-4 reocrd against the Reds, including 0-3 this season. He was going up against Bronson Arroyo, who had prevailed in his last four starts against the Cubs. So, of course, the Cubs prevailed 2-0 for their fourth victory this season vs. the Reds, who have beaten them 13 times in 2013.

There always is room for April Rose to be part of this space.

* Speaking of betting or baseball (or at least trying to forecast the sport), it’s only natural that the the Chicago White Sox, who entered Monday’s game against the visiting Detroit Tigers, would prevail 5-1 at U.S. Cellular Field. After all, the Tigers had been 8-4 in the season series before the American League Central division leaders lost to the division’s last-place team.

* THe losses by the Reds and Tigers (or looking at it another way: the victories by the Cubs and White Sox) should tell you that the surest thing in baseball is that there are no sure things.

* One of the best parts of the aftermath of the Chicago Bears’ season-opening 24-21 victory at Soldier Field against the Cincinnati Bengals is finding out one of our favorites April Rose will be back as part of the Bears-themed “Huddle” television program. The show is to air Sundays at 9:30 a.m. on Comcast SportsNet. Something says that why there are recording devices for those of us who might not be awake at that hour.

There always is room around here for Loop Rock Girl Shannon Ihrke.

* Speaking of lovely ladies and favorite females who have “Loop Rock Girl” on their resumes, one of the best parts of the aftermath of the Chicago Bears’ season-opening 24-21 victory at Soldier Field against the Cincinnati Bengals is seeing Loop Rock Girl Shannon sending out a Bears-themed photo. Yes, football season is indeed a beautiful thing. And, yes, I realize the first sentence of this paragraph has a dangling participle, thank you.

* The Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks are to hold training camp in South Bend, Ind. Presumbably when they made those plans, it was for reasons other than to take the local folks minds off the Notre Dame football team’s season-opening loss at Michigan.

* Speaking of Michigan, I am a big fan of Michigan — the state, not necessarily the Wolverines. As fate would have it, I was drving in that lovely state late Monday/early Tuesday when a state patrol car turned on its flashing lights. I pulled the rental truck that I was driving over to the shoulder. The officer informed me trucks have a 60 mile-an-hour speed limit and are not allowed to pass in the left-hand lane. Oops. Or, double-oops, as the case might be. He took my license, etc., said he would be back and went to his car. There presumably he was writing up a ticket or two. When he returned to hand back my driver’s license, I waited for some form of punishment. “No ticket?” I inquired. We had a fairly light-hearted conversation about whether the truck had sufficient weight to be subject to citation for transgressions. He said there would be no ticket. “Welcome to Michigan,” he said before heading back into his vehicle and off into the night. Welcome, indeed. Not to mention relieved. I definitely will be say yes to Michigan. Unless I am stopped again in a rental truck and a state patrol officer wants to know whether I realize trucks are supposed to obey a 60 m.p.h speed limit.
