Jaime Edmondson’s Week 9 Picks & Pics (updated)

November 6, 2011 @ No Comments

Still trying to figure out where that extra hour of sleep went. Fall back? Would like to fall back to sleep. The only reason not to is to see Jaime Edmondson’s picks and pics for Sunday’s NFL games. Please forgive any tardiness in this posting on the time change. Hey, it’s the best excuse some of us can come up with on short notice.

Jaime Edmondson is always welcome on NFL game days. Or any other.

For the early Sunday games, the Playboy Playmate predicts: Atlanta over Indianapolis, San Francisco over Washington, Houston over Cleveland, Dallas over Seattle, New Orleans over Tampa Bay, Buffalo over New York Jets and her beloved Miami (she once was a cheerleader for the Dolphins) over Kansas City.

For the late-afternoon games, Jaime says: Arizona over St. Louis, Oakland over Denver, Cincinnati over Tennessee, Green Bay over San Diego and New England over the New York Giants. Meaning Jaime went 9-3 during the day games. Her Sunday night selection: Pittsburgh over Baltimore.

Jaime also provides sports commentary with her Play-By-Playmate column at playboy.com If there is a better combination for a St. Louis Cardinals fan than Jaime writing about the team’s capturing the World Series, I haven’t come up with one yet. And won’t bother trying to.

For those who prefer facts to photos, here is some information from the NFL publicity mill:

Buffalo (5-2), Carolina (2-6), Cincinnati (5-2), Detroit (6-2) and San Francisco (6-1) already have equaled or surpassed their win totals of last year. The Houston Texans (5-3) can accomplish the feat this week when they host the Cleveland Browns. If Houston earns a victory, it will mark the sixth team this season to have equaled or surpassed their previous season’s win total through nine weeks, tied for the second-most since 1990.

The most teams to equal or surpass their previous seasons’ win total through the first nine weeks since 1990:

2001: 7
2010: 6
2004: 6
2011: 5 (through eight weeks)
2007: 5
1992: 5

The Kansas City Chiefs have won four consecutive games after starting the season 0-3. By beating Miami, the Chiefs can become the fifth team to win five consecutive games after starting a season 0-3 since 1970. The teams that won five consecutive games after starting a season 0-3 since 1970 (with final W-L record in parentheses):

2003 Pittsburgh Steelers (9-7)
1998 Buffalo Bills (10-6)
1986 Los Angeles Raiders: 8-8
1970 New York Giants: 9-5

The defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers (7-0) are the last remaining undefeated team in the NFL this season. With a victory this Sunday, the Packers would become just the third defending Super Bowl champion (1990 San Francisco, 1998 Denver) to start the following season 8-0.

Green Bay leads the NFL with 32.9 points per game, scoring 20+ points in all seven games this season. With at least 20 points on Sunday, the Packers can become the fifth defending Super Bowl champions to score 20+ points in each of their first eight games. The four others (with consecutive 20+ games in parentheses):

1983 Washington Redskins (16)
1998 Denver Broncos (13)
2000 St. Louis Rams (12)
2007 Indianapolis Colts (9)

With 300+ passing yards and two TD passes on Sunday at San Diego, Packers QB Aaron Rodgers will join Pro Football Hall of Famers Steve Young (six in 1998) and Joe Montana (five in 1982) as the only players to pass for 300+ yards and two touchdowns in five consecutive games in a season.

New Orleans QB Drew Brees has 2,746 passing yards. With 240 passing yards on Sunday against Tampa Bay, he can break his own NFL record for most passing yards ever through a team’s first nine games of a season. Brees threw for 2,985 yards in the Saints’ first nine games in 2008.

Brees also has a TD pass in 35 consecutive games and can tie Brett Favre for the second-longest streak in NFL history. Johnny Unitas holds the record of 47.
