For all those folks out there who wanted the Chicago White Sox to get rid of Ken Williams as general manager, your wish apparently is coming true — although not the way you might have hoped. Williams was elevated Friday (Oct. 26) to a higher position in the organization with assistant GM Rick Hahn taking over as general manager. Williams becine executive vice president. Next time, maybe the haters need to be more specific in their wishes. As if chairman Jerry Reinsdorf would pay much attention — if any at all — to such sentiments.
* The fall from grace for Mark Grace is far from graceful. The former Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman could face jail time in a DUI case, authorities in Arizona said Thursday. Grace, who also was a television analyst for the Diamondbacks before Bob Brenly replaced him after the 2012 season, could face four years in prison. On the bright (?) side, whatever his jail time, he needn’t worry about the Cubs winning a World Series during his incarceration.
* Speaking of the Cubs and the World Series (which they have not won since 1908), former Cubs shortstop Ryan Theriot pinch-hit for the San Francisco Giants in their 2-0 victory vs. visiting the Detroit Tigers for a 2-0 series lead. Theriot was a member of the 2011 World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals, and how many Cubs or former Cubs can say they have appeared in consecutive Fall Classics? Oh, in his plate appearance, Theriot struck out. For the record, the Cubs have not struck out in a World Series game since 1945 — against the Detroit Tigers. If that’s any consolation for Cubs fans (and the guess here is that it is not).
* The “Champs for Charity” hockey exhibition Friday at Allstate Arena that will benefit the Ronald McDonald House of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana will have honorary celebrity coaches: Jenny McCarthy for Team World and former Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster for Team Chicago. Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. contest are available at Ticketmaster.
A little Gangnam Style silliness? Oh, why not:
Today being Friday (provided that yesterday was Thursday and tomorrow will be Saturday), that means another episode of “Sports & Torts” with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris is in the talkzone.com vaults. Or wherever the fine folks there put podcasts; OK, something says the podcasts exist in cyberspace. The guests on the Oct. 25 program were legendary broadcaster Vin Scully and former football star Bobby Mitchell. You can tune into the podcast here.
The discerning consumer of “Sports & Torts” will note that there is no lovely lady included in the Oct. 25 show. True. But there is only so much time in a 60-minute program. And with David being away from the studio on business, it seemed unkind that he would miss out again on an interview with a lovely lady.
If things go according to plan (and occasionally they actually do), the fetching female on the Nov. 1 program will be Ciara Price, the November 2011 Playboy Playmate. Sad to say, Ciara is more likely to be available by telephone than be in the Talkzone studio, but David and Elliott will be happy to settle for that.
Speaking of Playboy Playmates, Jaime Edmondson picked the Minnesota Vikings to beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday night. The Bucs prevailed. We will look forward to her Sunday picks and pics and be happy to post. Or you can check her out on Twitter at @jaimeedmondson.
OK, time for some random video (although the video-research department around here likes to think of it as serious work rather than any random activity):
